But.. I went to a farm yesterday and got my geese and some Muscys and the woman had turkeys as well. One was penned for sale but one was showing off to me. Scratching his big and heavy (they SOUNDED heavy!!!) wings against the ground and his waddle was all blue and bright and red and he was making a big fuss and showing his colours and... well.. it reminded me 100% of American Thanksgiving. It was like a moment of childhood recollection (I moved to Aus) where I was putting handprints on cardstock and painting orange onto the thumb. And that's when I decided I wanted one.
I can't even get any for the big farm up north (I'm allowed to get birds for that farm under the following conditions: I build their pen, I pay for the birds and I make sure they don't annoy the everloving heck out of Father - which I lost on the Guinea Fowl who, get this, are handtame. OOPS!) because Father REFUSES to have turkeys (and peacocks, 'because they poo in the drinking water and on your roof!').... so I know I gotta wait until around July when we move to the new property. We have someone building us a house on a 2 acre plot right now that we're gonna rent for a year or so until we can get even more.... so they're will be space soon. The future landlord has also already approved a cow for milking!!!....I'm getting way way off track.
Turkeys. Big ol' show-offy gobble gobble loud turkeys. Questions:
How big do the ladies get?
What do baby turkeys look like??! I totally picture them in my head looking EXACTLY like the grown up ones, all colourful and gobbley, only tiny - and I know that's not true. My other mental picture is a saggy looking naked neck.
How loud is a breeding pair? Do they make sexy time noises?
When is a good time for turkeys to get the chop? Like ultimate forget size go for taste/fat ratio size for killing a turkey.
How stinky are they?
How often do the males show off for you?
Is the normal loudness for a showing off turkey about average or can they/will they get WAY louder and possibly annoy neighbours?
Do they fly and how high should I build the fences?
About how many eggs will a turkey lay in a clutch? How long to hatch?
Are turkey eggs delicious?
Is a fresh-killed day-hung fat young turkey as delicious as I picture it???
