There really are wonderful people in this world! I posted an ad completely putting myself in a place to be taken advantage of and I have more people lining up to sell birds that they really had not planned on selling, just so I wouldn't pay someone $40.00 for a chicken!
I'm going to pick up at least two hens (and maybe a roo) for less than $40.00!
What a blessing! This is going to be a great week!
as you stated you can now be picky. Some lay smooth shells and some lay a more rough shell--even tho they are all green or blue.
Don't feel bad I paid 25.00 per hen for some Faverolles and then had to pay for the shipping. It was well worth it! They are out of wonderful lines and that's what I wanted!
I don't think that $40 is unreasonable at all. Take a look at www.eggbid.com and you'll see what I mean. Factor in the price of shipping...and you'll have answered your own question. Think of how much you might spend eating out at a restaurant. Now which will give you more satisfaction in the long run, a pet or eating at a restaurant?
I would pay 40.00 or more for a Quality bird from a reputable breeder. I have not done this yet! I really like to get the babies. If you get your babies and grow them out have a few really nice birds for breeding then maybe buy an older bird that will compliment your birds. I have to admit I am a lil leary about bringing in birds from another flock to mine. With the babies they are in side and away from the other birds for a good 6-8weeks which is a good length of time, if they are sick you will know long before they are around your other birds. If you just want colored eggs get you some babies from a reputable source. I think a lot of the fun is the lil babies. then they get to know you .....
My experience with the colored eggs is various shades. Not green to brown.
Just so you know you can get 4 in my area for that price. I bet you did get alot of offers for that price as I would gladly sell you one of mine if you were close for $40.00. You might be able to place a chick order for that price and get all hens.
