I wanted a hen that lays colored eggs and I'm getting her for $40.00

Offering $40 for a grown hen that you couldn't find elsewhere but really wanted?
I see nothing outlandish whatsoever about that. You saved a lot of your own time searching for what you wanted; an unending expenditure of your time and energy is worth a lot more than $40. If I could find two or three solid-navy-blue Orpington hens for sale, I'd gladly pay $40 each.

Yeah, I came up with that price by figuring how much it would "cost" me to order/ship baby chicks, raise them... only to find out that I got 99% roos! LOL
I only have room for 1 or 2 hens so I can't really order any pullets because the minimum would be more than I could house... which would mean I would need to big a bigger coop/run... which in the end would be a *whole* lot more than $40.00. I figured it would be a bargain if I could get it for that much!

I still think its expensive as they are not at all rare. I would say one of the most common breeds and easy to find in any area unless you live in Antartica. I dont think you would have that much time invested. If you lived nearby I could take you to many farms that have them or even to swap days where you could choose from hundreds at $10 a peice.

If i were you i would look at a couple of the offered hens. If you are gonna pay that much for EE iwould want to see a Very healthy environment.
I got lucky and found a very kind old farmer and got my girls for $ 8 a piece.
But i can understand you offering more for a breed you really want. That was my big thing I wanted those awesome green and blue eggs.

Enjoy your girl i guarantee she will be spoiled.

I wonder why in the world I ever bought a house in the 'burbs when I *really* wanted a farm. I'm sure if I lived out somewhere and had a farm I'd be in the right circles to be able to get one for $10.00 but such as it is, I'm not able to do that right now. (I will be one day, though!

I'm completely aware at how ridiculous it is to pay that much for one, especially not "show quality" or maybe not even a "purebred". The people that have answered my ad will not *let* me pay that much.

But I am happy that I'm getting what I want for a decent price.

I'm very happy to find out that there are a lot of decent people in this world. They are easily over-looked because of all the negative things people do, but there really are nice people out there - and a few of them found me!

I'm totally in the same boat as you, in the burbs wondering why... But the house is for sale, so maybe not long now for me! Anyway, we only had one EE which was a rescue from some annoying people. (They decided the hens weren't laying enough so they just slaughtered them-except our little EE who escaped!)Anyway, unless it's an Araucana, I believe all EEs are "mutts", that is, bred entirely for the color of egg. Not that that matters, at all! We loved our EE, she was the quietest hen we've ever owned! It took months to get her to stop roosting in the trees, though.

I got *5* girls (and one egg laid this morning!)!!!! How much?!?!?! 20.00!!!!

The guy I got them from raises them as a hobby and when he saw my ad, he thought "wow, this person really wants one... I bet she'll be a really good home for some!" So when I got there, he told me that he would sell me a laying hen for $10.00 and let me have 4 two week old pullets (that he had gotten for himself)!

The hen is beautiful, although she is just an "Easter Egger", but the babies are pure Araucanas. The best part about the whole thing is that he can take my cockerels that I can't house. I just discovered today that 5 of my 6 Lt. Brahma chicks are male. I'm SO done with straight run! LOL

Now, I've got to get a bigger run... or more tractors...

.. I only had room for *one* hen... not five -- but I couldn't walk away without them! They're so cute.

I'm really hoping the babies will be quieter than the hen -- she was yelling and raising all sorts of a ruckus after I got her home. She does NOT like being by herself... but for now... I guess that's just what is going to happen! I may have to bring her in my house is she starts doing it tomorrow. So far, the neighbors are tolerant - I certainly don't want to push it with a yelling chicken!
