One of my white Silkie roos and my buff bantam Cochin roo were having a crowing contest today. They don't quite have it down pat yet, and it was sounding a bit strained and incomplete. They are only about 7 weeks old.

So I thought I would chime in and teach them a thing or two about how a crow is supposed to sound. At the top of my lungs, I did my best crow (and I'm very good- I used to have a big roo).

I couldn't see the Cochin from where I was, but the Silkie looked so dismayed that I will never do that again. He looked absolutely crushed and I felt like a meanie.

Poor youngster probably didn't realize you were the big rooster of the flock.

I would love to know what that little silkie thought when you crowed.....probably "that is the strangest roo I've ever seen and why doesn't he have to sleep outside with the rest of us"

Having at least 12 roo's in the run I get crowing all through the day. I, too, have gone out and given them lessons on crowing. I am not sure, but I think maybe that is the reason they sound so bad! Still, I love the sound of them....all day long!

My stepson lives about 500 yds away from the coop and the coop is outside my bedroom window. At 515 this morning I texted him....thougt he was outside yelling....told him to shut it down....at 1030 this morning he texted me and wanted to know what that text was about. Told him I thought it was him outside yelling.....we laughed and he said he had heard it too....sure did not sound like a crow! Needless to say I went out at 515, in the dark, and let them out!!

It was not a pretty sound......
