All three of my beautiful chooks were gone this morning. Door open and feathers everywhere.
They were just three years old, and I’d hand raised them from babies. They were all so sweet- they come to their names and cluck at me for treats.
Recently they survived a massive 60+ year old coral tree destroying their coop in the middle of the night. Somehow they got away unharmed and just terrified out of their minds. And because their coop was gone, we had to move them to their old coop. The wood was rotten away in places and all the locks rusted away, but we were waiting for the insurance to cover the coop before ordering a new one.
But something broke into the coop last night and took the lot of them. Just feathers everywhere.
I live in NSW Australia. We don’t have all that many predator species around. It’s obviously not a bird that gotten them. Something that was smart enough to pry open a door with a broken bolt. Something that was brutal enough to take all of them.
They were big chooks- Australorps and probably a bit fatter than they should have been.
Any idea what could have taken them? Im still numb and crying over their loss- I don’t want to ever get any more chooks without knowing what might have gotten them and knowing how to prevent it from happening again
