IA here

In a nut shell, they are a large fowl breed developed in the Decorah, IA area by accident or on purpose after 1900. At one time they were a more common dual purpose bird but larger birds pushed them aside. They are rare and we should all be concerned with that with our area of interest.
I will post some pics of them tomorrow. Males grow to approx. 6lbs and the females 5lbs. They lay a white egg and are known to go broody.

How many would you like Lisa? And you are aware that they may be straight run? No money til you pick them up! Can't beat that with a stick!

Here are pics I copied from Feathersite. They do look pretty.

A note about the first pic from Feathersite...the cock does not have a tumor. He gorged on the feed while waiting to have his picture taken! His crop is very full.

Are you saying that you have some of these available for sale, mrandmrschicken? If so, how much? These are regular sized chickens, not bantams? I might be interested if you have some available.... I really hate to get something new before winter, but this might tempt me.

Do you know how cold-hardy they are?

Do you know how cold-hardy they are?

1. I do not have any of these birds.

2. What I am trying to do is get anyone who is interested in having some, please give me the number of birds they want so I can place an order for chicks.

3. I am willing to raise the chicks until the folks are able to pick them up here or at a show I may be attending.

4. We need to get these chicks ordered so they will be ready for winter. Now is the perfect time of year to ordering chicks. Old timers will tell you that fall chicks are the hardiest and best producers.

5. I will front the cost until you are able to pick up your birds. I will need to add a bump in the price to cover feed costs that I incur.
Example; chick feed at $12.00 a bag X 2 = 24.00 divided by say 30 chicks would be an additional .80 per chick, 80 cents.

6. So if I do the math correctly... Assume $ 2.50 per chick X 30 chicks = $ 75.00
+ 15.00 shipping
---------
$ 90.00 total for inital chick cost
/ 30
---------
$ 3.00 per chick
+ .80 for grow out. Includes brooder care, heat lamps, vitamins etc.
Bottom Line: $---------
3.80 For a two month old started chick, ready for winter

That is a reasonable price! I will not charge any delivery fees if I am going to a show anyway.

7. All I need now is to know how many chicks everyone wants! Lets get the ball rolling... no moss under our feet now!

8. I will post exact prices today! They will not range much from what I have listed.

OK, I'm in. I'll take 10 and will plan to get them from you in Iowa City. Will that work?

karimw... thats fantastic! Got ya down for 10. That will work fine. Thanks for getting the ball rolling!
Have checked with the two hatcheries and both are out until the 15th. Need to place the order asap however.
Shipping is cheaper than I thought by a couple bucks but the price is higher for pullets at one place so it will still all equal out almost exactly as I figured.

And Lisa, you're in for 6 is that correct?

NEXT!

So, I don't mean to sound really stupid, but really I am when it comes to chickens....you'd be getting chicks then on or around September 15th? I'm just trying to figure out about how old they would be going into winter.....

I guess being new to all of this (only have raised 12 chicks from about 2 weeks of age until now, I don't have much experience! Please forgive my stupid questions!

) I don't want to get into something I'll regret, especially going into winter.

So having said all that, they should be about 2 months old in November? Is that old enough to be incorporated into an outdoor coop with an existing flock along with the cold that we have here in Iowa?

Thank you for your patience with me.
