IA here

I would like to know what breeds everyone has. I am trying to do some planning for next year. I go back and forth on what I want but I have to keep my main priority right up front, and that is eggs. I currently have BSL, a couple Australorps, 2 buff orps and a mutt rooster. The mutt rooster will go when I get another one. My thinking now is to go with good brown egg layers.

So with that in mind here are my thoughts. I think I want my rooster to be a RIR. I want some Delawares, RIR, Barred Rock, and Black Australorps as my pullets. Others I am considering just to get some in the flock are Speckled Sussex, Welsummer and RI White pullets.

Some of my reasoning is this. I know the sex link chickens are good egg layers. With a RIR roo I can cross with a Barred Rock hen and get BSL, with a Delaware hen and get red sex links, and if I get a RIWhite a gold sex link.

I know that RIR's are good layers themselves so here is one of my questions..
1. Do RIR roo x RIR hen = RIR chicks

2. If I got a white rock instead of a RIwhite could I still get a Gold sex link with a RIR roox White Rock hen?

3. Are Delawares a mix or is it Delaware roo x Delaware hen to get a Delaware chick?

Then do any of you have any of these breeds that you sell sometimes? Have I missed anything here, I am really trying to think this through and plan. I live in Madison county but live close to Union & Adair county and travel through Dallas and Polk a lot. I don't have an incubator yet either but that is not out of the realm by next spring.

This will be for early next spring but I am trying to get this formulated so I have my plan. I only want around 20 pullets total. Please educate me if I have mistated something or if there is a really good breed that I have missed. Thanks everyone, I love this forum.

I've yet to meet a nice RIR roo

The hens though seem to be nice - I sold the two RIR chicks I had earlier this year and the guy just e-mailed me they are very tame and lay well.

Don't know about the other breeds. I have a BC maran roo ( he is a jerk too) but on the whole Maran roos are nice. Also nice brown eggs.

Sex links are wonderful layers. My gold comets (red sex-links) are awesome but their eggs are more of a tinted brown/tan. They are also very nice.

Jerrit said his Hamburg has gone broody, and he thinks the eggs may be fertile. Think he said she has 10 eggs. And the Daddy would be my silkie mix roo, although the buff silkie is a roo..I doubt it would have mated though. So we might have some Silkie mix/hamburg chicks soon

I really hope the eggs are fertile and some hatch

1. Yes, RIR will breed true. I agree with PBJ about most hatchery stock RIR's. However, I have Heritage RIR's and they are whole other ball game. Very sweet, gentle giants in mahogany color. I will have them soon, mine aren't laying yet.

2. Not sure, sorry.

3. Delawares are a purebred and will breed true.

You can check my website to see what breeds I have. There are several.

Trish - you are right - the heritage RIR are a whole 'nother ball game. They are such a beautiful color. They almost look black. I have heard a lot of good things about heritage Delewares too but the hatchery ones are a crap shoot.

I guess the main thing is I want to build a nice flock and maybe be able to hatch out some of my own stock for my next generation of egg layers. I will check out your website. I may have to find out about the Heritage RIR's. I think Delawares are beautiful.

Trish...
I did not write it down and of course have forgotten some info that maybe you can help me with?
If you have a Delaware male X NewHampshire female, do you get a Dellie or a Hampster?
And If what I recall is correct, If it is a Hampster rooX Dellie female, you get the other?
Can you shed any light on this for me?
Thanks,
Eric

PS maybe pics late today, lots of stuff going on and boys home from school too! Teachers day to prepare for conferences or something?

Not sure what you call them, but I do know this. A silver factor male, over a red factor female, will give you sex links. The males will be more white and the females will be red with black tales.

To get the exact info, I would ask Cindy *Speckledhen* . She really knows her stuff!

Sorry gang no pics today. Have been busy with my own hatch of today and got called into work for a while as well....
Did lose another chick. So both those Blues that i thought would not make it, did die. The rest are healthy and going about their normal routine.
Should I order 2 more for Wed. hatch or just let it go? Let me know your thoughts.
