What they are doing with these canned off the wall type questions is seeing if you can think on your feet. A creative response usually indicates a well grounded person with a sense of humor - in the workplace that translates into a person who can take a bit of criticism, and be able to adjust to sudden stressful situations with poise. You give an answer like the question is beneath you or act like it is an insult to answer something so canned and stupid, you give the impression that you are hard to work with. Deflect the question and turn it into an opportunity to tell more about your experience in awkward situations or a successful project you were involved in - and you hit a home run.

Personality tests should be outlawed... they are discriminatory and easy to fake. When I come across one on a job site or in an application process, I skip it and send a cover letter and resume instead. If they offer it with the I-9 or W2 paperwork I ask if it is important and why. I find more often than not, the strong union shops and upstart businesses use them as a reason to weed out candidates they don't like but are the best for the job... its kind of a legal dance that should never be used.

Look at the interview process as a sales opportunity and you are selling yourself to the company. Ask questions to see if you would be a good fit, stay away from wage, vacation or other benefit type questions but ask about what are the shifts/hours that people in the position work, ask about projects, goals of the department, how they view overtime and weekend work but don't hint or even suggest you can't work these. Ask about the dress code, safety gear needed, company training programs and any other tangible that would help you decide if the job is worth your time and if you can make a long term commitment to the company.

Its tough out there, don't shoot yourself in the foot by not being aware of the stupid questions the office folks ask the people who actually know what they're doing, and above all - don't sell yourself short

As Supervisor and assisstant before that, I interviewed many candidates for various positions. I was directed to ask specific questions and not to ask specific questions. Many times my interviews were on weekends when I took advantage of being alone and actually able to get work done w/o interruption. I took the candidates with me and talked while I worked, but let them know they had my full attention, and they did.
I would have been embarrassed to death to ask someone what type of animal they would most emulate! It is like a teacher from Pennsylvania told me when in FL. We were both staying at the same resort. Jeff, was on the verge of retiring and glad to be doing so after what had just started in WI, and as he predicted in Ohio as well. He said in his home state, as well as many others, the real issue with education was the "Educrats". Not the teachers but those who set the standards but have no practical experience at all. I have found that true with interviewers as well. The young people who interviewed me, I would bet dollars to donuts, they are no longer working in those positions, but have moved on. They left a trail of educated mumbo jumbo behind them, moved on to another job and maybe two by now. All for money. We have created an environment where such silly questions can be asked because no-one thinks career and longevity. They want "team players", only for convineince. When do we get to be interviewed by people who know how to do the job instead of by transient interviewers? People like me who would never ask anyone to do anything I have never done myself. Now we hear, "delegate authority" instead of "do the job you were hired to do". The new job is job jumping, and false security from overly word-wise, PC folks who don't give a hang about the person, just the paper is important. Not what you can actually do but how you can sort through people like so much recycled plastic and find the candidate who can play the game the best with you............
As for me, I want security and honesty which begets longevity. Not needles and pins.

you know, when I re-read this conversation, it struck me... you're too nice of a person to work for a company that plays games... just like the response above this says... you want to keep looking for an honest company that treats their folks respectfully.

If there is a next time for the dumb questions, think to your farm management experiences, how you had to research and work with others to know what you know about chickens and farming. Think of what you do as a job and sell it to the next potential employer in skills that relate to them.

I am envious of the 100% hatch... the only time that I get chicks from my hens is when one shows up from out of nowhere with a clutch when I have no room for them and am too busy to properly care for them.

So yesterday I found myself, and family too, so far North on gravel roads I thought we were in Canada. Asked for directions and the farmer says "eh", and uses a hockey stick for a pitch fork! He tells us that Toronto, I mean Troys, farm is just "over there eh"!
all kidding aside, Troy we did find the shortcut out and even turned the right direction on 9! It was funny, those birds never made a sound in the car. Well, I think one of them yawned once... Got them home, left them in the cage, put hay in it, hung up some water and fed them. Then took care of my birds, let everyone eat and drink and chase around for a bit then it was lights out. I'd left the lights on for mine while we were gone so they needed a nice nap too.
I think it's that time of year to worm all the birds. Anyone got a good total wormer recipe that can go in their water? I've used other methods in the past and it's so tedious. For external parasites, a vet recommended using the spray on frontline type flea stuff. He said to spritz them under each wing and the vent and away you go! Gets all the critters on the outside, less handling time, and no dust in the air. You can also spay down perches, nest boxes etc. Downfall is expense. But time is money!

Did the usual peek in this am and there was a dry fluffy little Vorwerk having a nap,

one more 1/2 out of the shell, upside down, and stuck butt in air, 3 more pipped! No water, not expected til next week, don't know what happened? Only answer is the feed I am giving the parents is a super-nutrient strong chick hatcher or, the eggs that I had labeled to hatch and pulled out, I set these at the sametime and did not mark them? I think the later is more plausible. In this group is the first Sussex chick I have been able to hatched, maybe 2! Laid them on their side on the open edge or end of the incubator. Still have some due next week.
With the auto turner still going! That could have been a horrible experience! Better get back and check again.

I did add some humidity, don't know if I should have they seem to be doing okay without it?

Whew! I can now relax on the hatchers remorse - I sold half my week old chicks, 6 pullets and 2 hens this weekend, so now I have breathing room to hatch for Easter
big_smile.png
I let my friends sweet talk me out of one of the young splash cochins and now it sounds like she may end up being a house chicken! I warned them she was cuddly!

My Barred Rocks are starting to lay and the one EE pullet I kept from last fall's hatch is laying the most beautiful dark chocolate egg. She is lovely too, black with a gold collar and just the sweetest girl.

Would anyone be interested in a couple silkie hens?? Can deliver to Waverly or pick up in Chucktown. Want something less broody. Interested in d'uccles or EE banties or WOE pigeons or Old German Owl pigeons. Also have a 2 yr old Am Fuzzy Lop Buck, he is friendly but doesn't want to be held.

I guess :\\ they never called back so they don't want me. Although I really did want that job because it was for the plant section which is what I was interested in. Jerrit's dad had worked there and had to go through 4 interviews til he got a job and he said the same thing you said, that they just play games.Im not sure what you mean with the farm management though..I don't do much with that except feed/water the birds and collect the eggs. lol
But I guess now a job we are interested in doing isn't gonna happen :\\ jerrit has like 300$ left and we need fuel oil I guess and that will be like 100 and we will need groceries again in a week. Im going to apply to the grocery store here and hope to get it.

I was surprised with the chicks that hatched, especially since we didn't do lockdown right, that first one that hatched must have had energy cuz the other ones didn't hatch til that night. One was pipped and we left it for the night, but it hadn't done anything all night so we chipped the shell off - think jerrit said it pipped on the wrong end.
