Man almost everyone that went to the Burlington swap saw me. Love it when people stop to chat. I need to wear a BYC shirt next year if my club does it again. I wear a straw hat if it helps.

I cleaned the heck out of my coops too. Got to take advantage of the good weather. I've ordered 25 chicks and I'm firing up the incubator.

So exciting!

Flashpoint - where are you getting your purebred Ameracaunas from?

I haven't been to swaps in about 2 years. I used to set up in the corner under the roof with "The Rodent Guy" Larry B.

I'm getting my chickies from Dean w/ Happy Creek Exotics.

Wren that is a great idea about the shirts. I need to get one. Did you direct traffic from the side where you take your animals or the other side?

Farmgirlie your looking for a girl turkey we are hoping some of the poults (royal palms)I've ordered at least one should be a tom. Our Tom died over the winter. That has happened two years in a row. So I am not going to put any turkeys in that building anymore. Our female is in the barn with the goats and pony and she is fine.

Wren, I'm going to cluck like a chicken if I recognize you!!!

Yep, we got Tom for $1 at Kalona right before Thanksgiving. He was just a week old and nobody knew if he was a he or a she just that it was a Royal Palm. Well, earlier this week he let out sounds that confirmed he was a Tom turkey. I hope somebody at the swaps has Royal Palms this year so we can get him a girl friend. I'm going to have to keep him penned up so he doesn't wander over across the road into the woods in search of girls and get shot by hunters thinking he is some exotic albino wild turkey. I am planning to order some pullets for my Phoenix rooster so later I can hatch out purebred Phoenix. Right now he has just been running with my EE hens. I also am ordering a Buttercup rooster for my Buttercup girls since my Buttercup rooster passed away this winter before I got a chance to hatch out any purebred eggs. I might add some turkeys onto that order if they will let me.

Farmgirlie;
Tell me a bit about your Buttercups. Are they gentle birds? I am about to put an order in for some bantam buttercups and need some reassurance..
Thanks,
M

Flash Point - I am in need of a rooster. Something with brown on it. I have some EE hens I would like to breed to him, and I can't find one I like. I'd like to improve my four best hens and don't want solid black which is what I have now. I know they will be little for a long time but could you keep me in mind? Totally do cluck at me. I'll forget this conversation by then and get a real kick out of it!

Mom of 3-I work on the people side. The Pigeon club members like to work on the animal side. Don't know why that is exactly. But I'm on the south first person after the money guy.

Farm Girlie- wish I knew somebody that had palms. There were some poor ones at the Eastern Iowa Poultry show. One dollar? That's lucky!

yes, I will keep you in mind for the Americauna Roo, chances are I'll have plenty for you to choose from! I can arrange to meet you at the swap and bring your boy.

Funny, I didn't know there was a "people side" of the swap, since I always bring animals! You learn something every day!

Mine are the standard size ones. They are wild but they are older hens and I am not sure how they had been housed before I got them at auction. I don't think they had been handled much. I think if I got them as chicks they would be different. I have noticed that with all the chickens I have the ones I have hatched out or even bought as young chicks are a lot tamer and friendly than the ones I have bought as adults. I wouldn't say not to get any based on my experience. I love their color.

FarmGirlie & Mrandmrschicken- I have a hen & roo buttercup pair... I started out with 25 of them and found that no matter how much I handled them as babies and such, they are a very flighty bird. I sold most of them earlier this summer because I couldn't get them to tame down. I was down to 6 hens and a roo and still wasn't any better. I kept the best looking roo and hen because I thought they were really pretty and the comb is neat. I plan to sell my buttercup pair this spring only because I am more in love with the heftier size chicken (wyandottes) then this type of bird. The roo was frostbitten before I could help him so his points are rounded off now but the hen is laying an egg a day. Very pretty bird, but in my experience no matter how much you handle them, they are just a flighty bird all around.
