I'm new to this thread - live in Glidden, IA - it's about an hour west of Ames on Hwy 30. I have some BPR layers, and 25 10 wk old EEs that I thought were Ameraucanas when I bought them. I do really enjoy the girls and will probably be adding more as the weather warms up in the spring. Doesn't everyone? The only problem is I live in town and have the girls at my son's acreage about 5 miles away. My husband thinks I'm "obsessed" because I read so much, so will look forward to your posts on this thread. Lynn

Check out this article. They contacted Cedar Rapids with this info. My response is below, waiting for moderation. 2 other members of CLUC have left comments also, we're guessing they were moderated out.

Last time I checked, roosters taste like chicken. Put an ad on craigslist and a number of farmers will get in line to snatch them up. Chickens in shelters, do you really expect people to buy into the idea that this is actually an issue?

I agree with you on the hatchery issue. I myself hatch my own and sell chicks locally. I trade out any roosters received for pullets.

I don’t have an issue with rats. I think that sounds ridiculous.

My husband and I are proud of the way we raise our chickens. No drugs, they free range and are happy.

So we are to revert to caveman ways and everyone/thing lives free and happy and no one ever dies and we all have no rules to follow because it is bad to control other species? That sounds loopy to me.

A very militant group of vegans, aren't they? And I checked today, my post was edited out. No one is allowed to disagree with them.... Some people's kids...

I don't know nothin' about the show but will probably be going myself. I would like the same kind of questions answered. Sounds like the weather will be good for driving at least.

If you can get a hold of Wren, I'm pretty sure she is showing this weekend. She's a very busy woman though! Sometimes hard to get a hold of.

Have fun if you go!!

Chickbond;
The show should be free to enter, if not, $2-3.00 a head. The Sharpless Auction Center is located just past IA City on I-80 just before West Branch, exit # 294. Easy as having the chickens cross the road for you! You really should come but wear a jacket. It can be cool and... ear plugs!

ETA: It's always worth the drive! You might end up taking something home with you so bring a box!
