I was so glad to find this posting. I am from S.E. Iowa, down here in Amish country. Brown egg lover's here! Can't wait for my hatch next week! Anyone raising White Wyandottes out there??

Welcome Barngirl!

We camp once or twice a year down in SE Iowa Amish country, near Lake Wapello. Such a beautiful area down there.
I think you'll like reading on this message board -- so much to learn here. My brown egg layers should arrive next Monday - but I am unaware what breeds I'll be getting. Nice to see another Iowan here.

Yep, I do need ducks! We have a pond and nothing on it. We tried ducks last year. The poor little guys were left as well "sitting ducks" and vanished without a trace after two nights in the barn. We learned our lesson and won't get any till we are ready this year. I've been eyeing some silver appleyard hatching eggs on ebay. Anybody know how well they do in Iowa?

Have never been to the Burlington swap meet or the Kalona exotic sale. My two boys keep me so busy we don't go out much, unless it's to our barn. They are ages 2 and 4. I would love to go to an exotic sale. It's better I stay home, or I might get carried away:D

Hi Neighbors

I'm not in Iowa, but in Wisconsin. My family is building a coop right now and we're excited to have some chickens!
We would be interested in buying some started pullets - hoping for buff orpingtons, but open to other options

Any suggestions of where to look in the local(ish) area? We're willing to travel to any state adjacent to us!

Happy Day,

Hi Iowans! I'm actually an Iowa transplant - most recently from Colorado! However, now that we are not living in town but living on a farm, I just got done building my coop and got my first 3 birds tonight! I had a very nice woman from Freecycle offer me 2 hens and a rooster to start my flock - I'm so excited! I know the roo is an Ameracauna, one hen looks like a leghorn, and I'm not sure what the other is - standard, that's all I know. I just brought them home tonight and we were still putting finishing touches on the coop before we let them out! I still have a bit of work to do after I get home from work tomorrow on a gate to get into the outdoor run, and either putting netting over the top of the outdoor run, or clipping wings. I posted on another board about clipping wings - should I worry about them not being able to fly up to roost after their wings are clipped? I just don't want them flying over my 4' fence right away - my dogs aren't yet anti-chicken trained!

If anyone needs to rehome some hens, I'm in north Davenport and willing to drive around the QCA or so for more birds!

Hi Skydobb! We're not too far away, I'm in Troy Mills.

You may want to go to the Burlington swap meet on 04/05... I bet you find some birds there to feed your newly acquired chicken habit!
