IA here

Well, Eric, I'm sad to say that I'm pretty sure that we lost one of the bantam DE's. Couldn't find it last night when it was time to lock up. I told the boys to wait 'til morning 'cuz it might show up. It did that to me one other time, I think it slept away from all the others in the outdoor pen we have and it was in the coop in the morning. But no little banty this morning.

My oldest took our dog out with him after school to see if she could help sniff anything down, but discovered nothing. I don't know what or where or anything. Just gone. No sign of anything.

I hope you find her!

I just let P. out of the small coop for the first time yesterday. She really did well showing the chicks around and then at the end of the night she decided to take them to bed in the big coop. I always love watching mama hens with their baby chicks.

Of the 4 chicks that hatched 2 weeks ago the NN is the only one who is frizzled. They are very cute. Not sure what I'm going to do with them.

The only things I can think of are that maybe she decided to sit on a nest, a predator got her or when it gets dark, they sit and don't move, quiet as a mouse when they are alone They are cagey, if they want to hide they will! I do hope you find her. One of my little white Orloffs either got stolen or died last night. Someone who bought some chicks from me said it was really bloody on it's back. They slept too close to another pen and the older birds pecked it would be my guess. Poor little thing.

This is amazing... David and I went back to the show to feed and water the birds and check on their judging, lo and behold, the little Orloff, back in his pen with his two siblings and had a band-aid on his back! I was amazed and greatful. I asked in the office about it and they knew nothing so I asked that they make mention of it at the banquet and please tell the good samaritan they did a very good deed! That is certainly worth remembering! I took a couple picks but have to wait til we get home to download.

None of the birds did very well... some pretty stiff competition. or I should say they did not do as well as i would have liked. saw something new--a "straw" colored cochin. It was kinda pretty!

Was it lemon colored? I hope you got a picture of it - I really like cochins - especially the banty ones. Glad to hear your chick was returned!

Was looking at the four serama cross chicks and 3 of them have "silkie feet". Amazing since it comes from moms side and none of the hens are much more than 1/4 silkie. Ok I guess Dolly is half... Maybe she is the baby mama for them all

That's so cute your little chicky has a band aid!

Met up with my friend Jay today. He's cutting back on his breeds. He's just keeping his Cuckoo Marans, which are exceptional by the way!!! I have a rooster from him that I got earlier this year and he gave me the darkest Cuckoo eggs I've ever seen to hatch. They are as dark as my Black Coppers!

I'm taking over his Buff Tailed Black Marans project, and his wonderful Barnevelders. These Barnies have such sweet temperaments.

Straw colored Cochin, huh? I'd pay $1 to see that!

Do you mean straw and not lemon?

yes, that is odd about the feet. I thought the male carried the shank dominant gene but maybe thats just color?

If I remember trish, I will take a pic of the straw cohin. I believe it was a bantam. i'll collect the 1$ in IA City

I am just trying to picture what you mean by straw. Definately get a picture of that!

The NN frizzle and one of the others definately have some heavily feathered feet. I have them all in the basement in a rubbermaid tub with heat and no lid. This morning I found one of the chicks sleeping in Mount Washmore (the laundry pile). Apparently we need to step it up to a cage! My cats were both locked in the basement with them. Thank goodness one is not a hunter at all and the other has always known the difference between what is a pet and what is OK to hunt.
