IA here

I guess we didn't get as much snow as you folks along HWY 30. Stiff wind though and it was 0.5 when I went out to do chores this morning! The horses were glad to put on their coats yesterday. At least i assume so since they were so cooperative

All the chicks are in pretty good shape, though the IA Blues have the least amount of protection in their barn. They don't seem to mind though, they aren't hanging out under their heat lamp at all.

Friday they and about 6 cats trooped around the front pasture with me looking for a short in the hot wire. My husband calls me the Disney Princess

I fought with my "inherited" waterers a lot last year, but so far this year they seem to be OK, or at lease I have figured out how they are supposed to work

I have the plain jane Franklin waterers - are these the "cheap ones"? At least I can find parts for them!

I do envy you people with turkeys. Thats one thing I've always wanted to raise but simply not the room. I did hatch some wild turkey eggs once. After the poults were feathered I took them to a farm where they lived for a day with a guys ducks and that was it. Only thing left the next morning was a couple of wings.

A predator got in and ate the poults but not the ducks. A few days later the ducks disappeared too.....

My husband got the chains on the tractor today, really makes a difference. Yesterday he didn't have them on yet. After he got them on and everything was running great, the belt broke on the steering.

Atleast we can get in and out of our place now.

Well Eric - I am sad to tell you P. did not make it. She seemed to be getting better and was no longer sniffling, sneezing. This morning I found her dead in the coop. I think she died keeping her "babies" warm. Her wings were frozen out like she was protecting something and they still stayed close by her side and slept with her. They are all fine. I moved them back in with the Ia. Blues as the older hens I don't think would huddle with them. Mike was very upset with me and thinks I should have brought her back in the basement. Prince Charming is fine out there and really strutting his stuff, so I think it was the respitory thing that finally did her in.

We are very sad - Princess can't ever be replaced.

That is very sad news. She was probably still a little weak and had no fat reserves and the cold was too much for her. When the time is right, I know a nice lady down your way that has a very pretty Serama girl that you tried to rob her of, that would probably let you borrow her for a slumber party for some more of your own?
