I cannot help but chuckle about your post Kari, quite a dilema. Sometimes it's the end results that matter, call it a return on investment!

It seems at this point that 3 of the eggs from The Netherlands are developing. I can only hope they continue.

Oh that's excellent news!

I'm excited to see them, Eric!

Got a new gate up now my chickens have to stay home instead of wondering the town. Ok they just raid neighbors bird feeders.
Gave 20 eggs to my goat guy to see if he has better hatch than I got. Maybe Jerry (barred roo) is a better roo then BBC.

My 11-week old Blue Andalusian rooster crowed for the first time today. He looked so proud of himself! It made me laugh. Just wanted to share!

Those first crows are amusing at times.
When we were coming home from the show on Sunday, the Orloff cockerel had crowed so much, he was hoarse and could barely squeak! Wish that was the case more often....

I am really wanting to find an incubator this year. If you had any advice to give me on what to get that isn't too spendy what would it be? I will have chicken and maybe muscovy duck eggs. I am getting another batch of layers started and the ones I got can help me sustain a layer flock. I don't care about show or anything, I just want good layers.

It depends on what you call too spendy. I have had good luck over the years with my 2 little giants. They can be had for about $50 if you do not want an auto turner or fan. I spent a lot of time adjusting the thermostat before setting eggs. It hatched both chicken and duck eggs for me well. I had as good of a hatch rate with my with my cheap LG but I spend much less time with my new bator. I upgraded to a Genesis Hovabator this year with auto turner. I bought it on ebay and am very pleased. That has a digital preset temp and a fan. Both types hold about 40-50 eggs and have worked well for me over the years. I also have a Brauer auto stir that works well but I would never recommend it.

I really like my Brinsea Octagon. It doesn't hold as many eggs but I've had excellent hatches in it, plus it's temp-controlled and has a fan. It's under 100 dollars.

Well it has been a busy few days in my incubator and it aint over yet. The cochin eggs that were due today started hatching Sunday night

Sam - only 1 of the two green eggs in there hatched and I can't tell who he is right now. I thought I knew who it was but when I took that chick out to put them all in the brooder, it had feathered legs. SO unless my silkie got to the EE hen (not likely) then I was wrong. I have several olive eggsers hatching today, the pheasants are pipped and the best suprise was the cuckoo maran eggs that Mike got me at the auction are BLUE cuckoo!

The cochin eggs said "mixed colors" (not mentioned by the auctioneer) and I had debated weather that meant all their colors of birds were in one pen or it was an assortment of colors from several pens. I am pretty sure it is an assortment or colors.

There look to be 2 black mottled, 2 blue mottled, a couple of solid blue and then a few I'm not sure on at all. What do partridge and columbian chicks look like as babies?
