I tell ya... He was a barred rock. And huge. Was alright as a little cockerel. Was alright but high strung. But he's a roo. One thing I just won't tolerate though is violent aggression. It popped up late or I'd have never bred him. All the pullets I do have from him (only a few) are amazing. The cockerels are hit or miss but there are only two. One of them I cant give away and so plan to use him for industrial purposes. I now have all game bantam roos. Not on purpose. The hatch for this thread is my gold duck wing who is our absolute gem...and my leghorn hen. He jumped ship this past weekend to my other coop and has been covering, or trying, the large hens so I may be hatching even more bantam roo/standard hen crosses. My American Game bantam roo and my Sebright are trying. We shall see .Because...science. Is my excuse lolI still have scars on my arms and legs from the only roo I kept. The last attack I had to knock him out before I could escape to the house. I gave him to a guy who would eat him. Don't want those genes in the pool!
Because...science
Really glad that I put the eggs straight into the incubator! I candled some in the turner when I plugged it in this morning, because I was really curious. They should only be at Day 2 1/2, but some of the shipped eggs look closer to day 4. The eggs I set from my chickens aren't showing any veining yet.
Thank you! Me too!! I am keeping some of these to see how they turn out. Its a personal project I'm working on with my own birds. But I am going to start staggering hatches with a seperate hatcher next week. I have a silver laced sebright breeding with another of my small leghorn hens. And have Dan (the gold duckwing bantam) apparently successfully breeding some full size hens I have him with.My son has a Tshirt that says, "I'm doing science". You need one of thoses, lol.
The gold duck wings are so beautiful! I'm looking forward to pictures of the hatch!
That's great! @KikiLeigh02 (also known as "my enabler," lol) I have been fighting to NOT candle until Day 7. But, since I saw your post, I had to! I just started the turner today, too, and candled them from the top without removing them. Some veins, but more in line with 2-3 days, not the 4 days development that you are seeing. I so hope to get at least 7 or 8 out of this batch of 14!Really glad that I put the eggs straight into the incubator!
