I am from Charleston, SC.
Iced tea was MEANT to be sweet, lol.
When I was little, we used a measuring cup of sugar to two quarts (half gallon) of tea. However, through the years I have reduced the amount of sugar I use. I now call it my "barely sweet tea". One half cup of sugar in a gallon of tea is my current amount. I did have the sugar at less than that, but realized with the well water we are using here in the new house that the tea taste was severely affected and I could barely drink my own tea. I got a water filter pitcher and use the filtered water for the tea making. Also, apparently playing with the water filter caused my three children to drink more water all this past Spring and Summer. I guess it was worth the purchase price, lol. Oh, and you need to use one "iced tea bag" per QUART of water. Otherwise it's just too weak when the ice melts.
Hot tea is unsweet, unless I'm sick and using honey and lemon and RUM.
Japanese and Chinese hot tea are all drunk unsweet. The ex-husband used to use four packets of sugar in a small cup of Chinese hot tea. (Montel Williams: "There's a reason why and ex is an ex...")
Instant tea is an invention of the DEVIL, I tell ya! I ask "What's wrong with the tea?" at church and the lazy person doing Coffee Hour tells me "Nothing." Ha! Someone snuck that powdered
junk (worse words deleted...) in the kitchen again! Some people need to be flogged! I'll show you how to use the tea maker machine if you don't know how to use a pot on the stove! For the love of God, people!!! (Why, no, how did you ever know that I had such a strong opinion on this subject? lol)
Oh, and showing my pedantry even further: "Ice" tea is ice cubes made from tea. "Iced" tea is tea that has had ice added.
