Icelandic Chickens

Thanks everyone, here is what he replied to me after I sent a decription AND photos of the birds:

Hi Robin;

I mistakenly thought that when you said Icelandic chickens you were talking about a standard bred breed from Iceland. After looking at the picture and reading your description it seems that someone imported barnyard chickens from Iceland and I see almost no connection between them and a APA/ABA poultry show. Perhaps you should be advertizing them on the Backyardchicken group or the Urban chicken gatherings around Portland. If one isn’t set to produce a standard bred bird then an APA/ABA sanctioned poultry show seems to me to probably not be the appropriate place for them.

Brian Decker

APA/ABA judge

It is really making me angry that he is verbally "looking down" on not only me but the breed, and BYC as if we here on BYC are just a bunch of yeah-whos.....

Brian Decker appears to need a little educating. Problem is, those guys want them all to look alike and there is no way you will change his mind. Dang those Vikings for importing barnyard chickens into Iceland. What were they thinking? What about the APA and the SOP and the future SOB's? Rise above it and move on. Icelandics aren't for everyone.

Yes, tell hubby to get a move on. I need that incubator next week!

Well said Sheriff!

I will just add...

....(read man as mankind)...standard bred poultry are man's creations.....Icelandics are God's creations. Icelandic ancestors were gathered by the Vikings, brought to Iceland and then allowed to be what God intended, free-ranging, diverse, unique, beautiful. Man is never satisfied with what God has done, he feels the need to try to improve on it....to strive for the "Standard of Perfection", to show everyone how great of a "creator" he is. I love Icelandics because they are truly a "pure" breed, not a man-made one.
So........be like a duck and let it roll off your back....don't let it bother you... what you have is a rare gem that not everyone will recognize as worthy, but you know it is.....and like Mary said, "Icelandics aren't for everyone".

Off the soap box now...............

OMG, OMG, OMG, the eggs may be here tomorrow! They were shipped yesterday! I need to plug the incubator in, get the temp and humidity stable, boil water and get clean towels.

I copied, and pasted the long list Kathy posted, and sent it to him.
And that is the end of that.
Did you notice this last time he put APA/ABA Judge under his name?
he has never done that before.
he is about 70 years old, and an old "string man" say some.
he is also cranky if you ask me.
With a show up coming, I can understand his weariness.
But that is not reason to both insult ME, the breed (a breed he obviously knows nothing about!) and BYC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Applesauce on him.
I am a Washington Feather Fanciers Member, and WE CAN VOTE.
I wonder what he'd say if he knew some very old respected SPPA & ALBC breeder/members are raising Icelandics?
I am going to make a pizza, and eat it.

I believe it is a simple case of misunderstanding, actually. I am thinking Mr. Decker is just not aware of what landrace fowl represent. Education is what it would take, I agree.

x2
I tend to get carried away.

WHAT eggs?
Emu eggs???
OK, I crashed & tore all the ligaments out of my left knee (all of them) and have been missing ALOT...so what did I miss here??????

Well, I am guessing Emu eggs.
Geeze, where are these Emus that are mating & laying this time of year?
Dad's laid about February in NorCal...rain/snow...
But not in November....
So where are they coming from?
And next trip down, DH can bring the farm Master for future use, I am not using it.
It is supposed to be excellent for Emus.
Pizza is cooking...I am walking barely, braced & on crutches.
I wonder what Mr Brian Decker would say if Ed Hart e-mailed him to tell him how lovely HIS Icelandics are?
Ed told me he is fascinated, and absolutely loves the breed.
Donkey rear, the man is a mean old cantancerous donkey rear end...arghhhhhhhhhh:rant
