Icelandic Chickens

HELP!!!

I'm having some trouble and I'm hoping I can get some info.

Are Icelandics considered a true 'Breed', or just a mixed up local (to Iceland) barnyard mutt??? I say breed, others are telling me they arent a true breed.

Can anyone give me any tips?

Thanks!

BTW- Our Icelandic chicks are doing GREAT!! We LOVE them! Camera on its way so we can post pics soon! Did I mention we got a red/auburn colored chick like yours Warden? Looks just like the one you posted awhile ago (pg 96? or maybe earlier)

Can't wait to see how many eggs I get from Mary for my New Year's Day Hatch...

I just adore the way they all look!.. .I especially love the variety... Like a box a chocolates, you never know what you are going to get until you see what was inside.

What cuties!

Looks like you'll have lots of pullets to choose from for your flock! I know how much you like the different colors. And yowza, that's a lot of babies to raise through winter.

I agree, but barnyard mutts they are not! In one of Sigrid's post she points out that their DNA remains today nearly the same as the ancient birds. Monumental efforts have been undertaken since the early 1970's to locate, breed and preserve the remaining Icelandic chickens. So Suzette, tell whomever made the statement that they were barnyard mutts, they are not mutts but Viking chickens.

Calming down now,

Mary

She had absorbed all the yolk, there was no blood, she was just tightly squeezed into a ball by the inner membrane. It was the kind of chick you often see on eggtopsies with just the tip of the beak poking out and the rest eerily still under the membrane. But this little guy was still fighting to get out. I have tried my best not to help and to leave the job of hatching up to the chick. But in this case I knew what had happened to these eggs and I decided to help. So far I do not regret it. She is standing tall this morning and running in the brooder with the bigger chicks, eating, drinking, pooping, and sleeping. Oh, and posing for pictures!
