Icelandic Chickens

It is a great idea! They are gonna be sooooo happy! You, on the other hand, will be a wreck, at least for a while.

It is gonna work! I just know it will work out. This is gonna be wonderful.

I keep looking at your picture of the barn, and imagining the landscape dotted with your Viking flock ..... oooohhhhh, yes, it looks great, too!

OMG! That is great news! I hope the one from my egg is a chipmunk pattern or a blondie! Here are my chicks that hatched on Thanksgiving. They are developing the cutest crests and I even see some blue showing up. I have two dark babies like Kola in this group and one or two more in the juvies. Go babies!

Thanks Cheryl. I have over forty Icelandics right now but all but about ten are babies or juvies. I have Isi and then five juvenile roos right now. Three just started crowing and two others are too young yet. I will probably wait for them to grow out and then pick the best four to stay. That should allow them to form groups and should provide the girls with some protection. I don't want day-long crowing contests to annoy my neighbors si I plan to limit the number of roos I keep.

WOW, I can't believe how much they have grown! I love looking at their ever changing feathers. Ya just never know what they are gonna look like. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! I have not had a chipmunk one yet, so am hoping for one this time.

I have 3 fake rocks with holes cut out. I used them for hidey holes. They mainly go in their with treats to hide from each other but I can put them out in the pasture and they can use them for hiding. We also plan to do some planting. Through the middle of the pasture the berry vines are growing back rapidly and I may leave them this summer versus having them mowed down. They will love eating the berries and the tangle of vines should provide great protection. I just hope silly Lukka doesn't think it would be a great place to raise a family. I am expecting all those mystery egg experiences I read about on BYC! And, maybe a hen emerging from being "missing in action" with a flock of baby chicks!

This is gonna be great, Mary! I think those cut out rocks will be work really well, too.

Ya know, I have a fence line covered in grape vines, and my chickens run for cover there alot. Bushy, viney places will work out for them really well. They are amazing creatures, for sure.

Ok that does it - i actually just read an entire thread from beginning to end! First time - what really cool birds! The whole mystique behind them and the colorings - great story on how you got them - fascinating! Thanks !
