What scares me is the people in the turkey section that say the Tom's try to mate with the hens and can kill them. I'm not worried about blackhead so much, but I want my hens to be okay.

I hatched a single tom out of a total of three eggs and he's around 1 year old and hasn't been aggressive at all with the hens and they are all cooped up together. He acts as the lookout for the flock.

Kathy - from what I hear, turkeys are far more personable than chickens. They bond with people.

Sometimes too much. When my turkey hen was "in season" she would squat in front of me and almost trip me. Otherwise, she stuck to herself. Now she has a tom and he and I do not get along. If my back is turned, he charges, but as soon as I turn around, he backs off and acts like he wasn't coming after me. Darn him

One note Jake back again, re the Blue Wheatens, is that what they are? What is the Rooster coloration thats the mate? A BlueBreasted Red wing?

This is my favorite color on both. Little Bjorn is a BBRed wing, with feathered legs, he is developing into a beautiful bird, smaller RC, crested, and an active breeder. I have the one Blue Hen, and one Black with Gold cape, and the rest wheaten. I should have a very nice cross section of colors from them, hopefully can trade some roosters with Michelle,

My Arkansas Travelers throw a lot of variation in colors, so my cock isn't blue wheaten but just regular wheaten. I have about 7 chicks out of them now, and those chicks are a mixture of blue wheaten, regular wheaten, and one even appears to be golden duckwing. There is a possibility of getting Red pyles, and even black fowl occasionally I hear.

But here is a photo of my cock.


Basically, if you wanted to see a blue wheaten cock, just imagine all the black as blue. Some blue wheatens though will have blue in their hackle, or spreading across their back. My hen has a few blue hackle feathers I believe, but mostly she is just blue in her wings and tail; one or two of the pullets I hatched out of them those are about 50/50 on the blue to red ratio.

Thanks for the info on the turkeys, very encouraging. Congrats Kathy!!! I have no idea which is which, but they are all adorable. I thought I had the self blue spotted, then noticed 2 of them in the picture.

Jake......I've seen pictures of Icelandic hens that look blue wheaton-ish in coloring. (Like Kella) But I don't think any Icelandic sticks to a color pattern.
