Icelandic Chickens

Dar, The shortest I've let a broody hatch was at 11 days. It was not an Icelandic, it was one of my SLW. I had Icelandic eggs in the incubator and the SLW went broody, so I moved the eggs just before hatching so that she would hatch them herself. It worked great. I've put "started" eggs under Icelandic hens that had been sitting 14 and 15 days before and they hatched them and mothered them without problems. How far away are the eggs being incubated? Could you move them before hatching and put them under Ida?

They are a LONG ways away. 45 minute drive at minimum....

... it may not work. I've always got the Laree Brooder as backup, but it certainly would be nice to have a broody mama raise them.

Fostering is worth a try. Is she in a nest in your main coop? Is it a good place to put the chicks? If not, you need to move her now, before you try and put the chicks under her, so she can settle into the "new nest". Try to transition the chicks as soon as possible after they are born and do it at night if at all possible.

for success!!

Dar - I've placed chicks under an olive egger broody when she was broody less than a week. I made the mistake though of moving her first and she freaked out. So I let her go back to her nesting box and tried again that night. I left them in the upper nestbox for that night, then moved all of them to a broody area after she accepted them. It worked fine that way.

No reason to not at least try to get her to accept them. Maybe she'll be like Lukka and mother ANYTHING.

I've been following (lurking) on here for quite a while and really love everything these guys bring to the show. They're hardy, colorful and full of personality. I'm thinking I need to find eggs to hatch .. If the ship well. Any advice?

I've only hatched ship eggs once, 3/8 hatched. It was also my first attempt at hatching. I don't know who has eggs available right now, all my breeds are free ranging together.

I'm not in a big hurry just would like to have something lined up to have them in spring. I just got my waterfowl seperated and will be hatching babies from them as breeding season arrives. That would be a good time to hatch chicks as well in the other bator unless one of Mom's silkies go broody
