Icelandic Chickens

Kathy, I hatched a chick this afternoon that looks very similer to yours! S/he doesn't have so much "Rust" Color on his body, just on his head under his neck. Mine is a Blue Andalusian X EE - I think!

Ok Warden, next time you have some of them good ole icelandic eggs, ship them my way. I will surely let you know what the hatch rate is etc., etc., and I would be most gracious.

Just send me a list of what you need to know about them and I'll answer every question, promise!

Mary, one of the yellow guys had spraddle legs. I tried the bandaid splint thing but I don't think it's gonna work.

I'm going to keep it anyway and see how well it gets around. I understand your position re: eggs, and appreciate your commitment to the project. Hope I'm not among the disappointments. I do appreciate being included in the project. Anything I can do to help, let me know. Won't have eggs for 6 months or so though.

You are not a disappointment Bob! You have let me know from the first candling and I appreciate it.

I am so sorry about your little blondie. I have not had many Icelandics with it but plenty of other breeds I hatched have had it. I have not been terribly successful treating it but the last time I was successful I used the pipe cleaner method. I think I also put that little guy in a cup to force the legs into position. He was not happy. More often than not I am unsuccessful. I hope it works out for the little guy.

Ryan,
I would imagine, being as they are Icelandic Chickens, that they would not do any worse in Minnesota than other cold hardy breeds do

In fact, I thought I read somewhere through this thread that someone had them in the north and they did fine? I could be wrong on that one, but they shouldn't be cold sensitive, at least not anymore so than orpingtons or wyandottes

I'm not an expert here, but my understanding is they are a cold hardy breed. ETA: I think I'd be more concerned about them in the heat than the cold.
