Icelandic Chickens

Yes, that chick appears to have a rose comb.....exactly how it will look at maturity can only be guessed at. My roosters that have/had rose combs do not all look exactly alike....and because of the myriad variety of genes that Icelandics carry, making a guess about how it will look is about as good as it gets.

I like the way that looks! If I was a betting man I think it will be similar to Audun's crest :D can't wait to see how they turn out. I'm hoping the crested pullet has a full crest like the one in your avatar pic.

My avatar, Eik, has the best crest I've hatched here. Here are two of her siblings. Her brother's crest is not as impressive...yet..... Her sister's is what most of my crested females look like here. Note the size difference between males and females.

I am going to look closely at the heads of my grown icelandics tomorrow. I only knew about the crest being the 'puffed up' version as shown in your avatar. Some of mine may have the mane like one..

Hi Daron

Good to see you here.

I like the crests, I want them on all of my chickens, I just think that they look good plus the extra feathers have got to help to some level to keeping the heads warmer,

and similarly I prefer the rose comb, in all variations, even a pea comb, the less comb the less freezing of them. Although the Hedemora seems to have mostly full single combs, and not a lot of freezing from what I have read. Perhaps it has more blood vessels or is thicker ? I dont know, but for the Icelandics I want all rose combs.
