Icelandic Chickens

How did I guess you'd say that?

If you can pen Isi with a hen ( i know thats the last thing on a new landowners list HA!) you could be sure to hatch some of his line to keep those aparently uncommon feathered legs! Does Sigrid have any with feathered legs? How is Sigrid by the way... she MUST be up to something with her Icelandics! No one can have Icelandics and not just love them! Tell Sigrid hello and a BIG thanks from all of us for the inspiration and a few good Icelandics! And tell her that there are some real dedicated preservationists out there and you caught one! ME! LOL!

Well I just reduced my flock of Icelandics by 14! I gathered up 14 juvenile roos last night and a farmer from a neighboring town picked them up this morning. I hate doing it but I really needed to. I still have more roos than I need but I am going to wait until some of the younger ones feather out more to decide which to keep. I have 13 eggs in the incubator but I candled them yesterday and see nothing. It may be a day too early to see plus I couldn't find a dark spot in the barn so I candled them by holding them inside a cabinet. I'll try again after dark tonight.

So as of now I have a flock of 22 free rangers, 9 in the grow out coop and 3 in the brooder. Oops, maybe four in the brooder? How many did I get from you kelly? I am going to have to go down and count again.

Ok I have been watching and reading for quite a while now. I absolutely LOVE all the efforts you have all put out.
But am wondering how many of you keep multiple breeds? How do they all get along? And do you keep the other breeds seperated out away from the Icelandics? Do you only keep Icelandic roo's with your hens? Or do you keep all the breeds seperated? If you keep them all seperated, do you free range in shifts, or at all?

My heart has settled on two breeds, Icelandic "when and IF I can get them," and Ameraucana. But I am trying to figure out how to free range two seperate flocks, without any inter-breeding between them.

Also, How many hens do you keep per rooster? I understand that there have been some fertility issues? Now is this due to non mature birds, too many roo's, too many hen's, or is it just the season? I am really trying to learn as much as possible, before asking, or begging for any chicks/eggs. lol I always want to do right by ALL of my animals.

Anyways again I love that you are all working together, and would love to join in your efforts some day.

Is there anyone in Washington state with these birds yet?

edited to add my last question
