Icelandic Chickens

I just wanted to say hello. We are new to chickens and Icelandics. We got 7 11 week old Icelandics on Saturday. 4 hens and 3 roosters. I'm sure we'll have to rehome 2 of the roosters at some point, but right now they are all getting along.

I have two brothers (there was a third) that all hatched together and live fine in a pen with the ladies. There's also a tiny (12 oz) geriatric serama roo that lives with them and they've never bothered him in the least. I also have a bachelor pen with 5 Icelandic cockerels, a CCL roo and an OE cockerel, everyone gets along fine. My experience has been my Icelandics aren't terribly aggressive with each other.

Good luck, have fun with your new birds.

You have an excellent starter flock. I think you can do well with two roosters, so far I have had not much luck with keeping more together, it seems two will gang up on the third. And they will go after young roosters when they start to chase the hens.

Good luck with them and keep the photos coming !

Thanks! I think we have 3 roosters, it's hard to tell right now. None of them are crowing yet. I will say the hens seem much braver than the roosters right now, but they are still very young.

Rairai, love your birds! Looks like they could possibly have some of Lyle Behl's line in them. One of your pullets is similar in color to a pullet I have

Congrats on the find!

So far as keeping multiple roosters, I have two Icees that are brothers and were raised together. I've only seen them go after each other a few times to settle who was boss, but no one has ever gotten hurt. When they were younger, they would run from an Ameraucana cockerel I had, but now they work together to kind of flush the rival BR cockerel away from the flock. And, they do tend to tag team the ladies...........

Jake, I wouldn't worry about the power outage. I have chatted with another chicken friend about this and we both feel like the really dangerous temperature changes are when the eggs get too hot. The first batch of eggs she ever incubated got unplugged for a whole night, and the temp was down in the 60's. She plugged it back in and the eggs hatched out later, no problem. So I would think that your chances are still pretty good of getting chicks.

It seems to be the season of power outages - the friend I gave eggs to had her power out for four hours, but she says that five of the original seven eggs are still doing fine. One was even doing its own version of Saturday Night Fever

Thanks! After I did some research I decided we needed to bring all 7 birds home. We love them!

pics of my 5.5 week olds can you gender ID...I know some of the pics are to far to really tell. It is really a two person job to take close-up pics of an Icelandic but I think you guys probably knew that. Thanks in advance for help sorting these lovelies out!

#1 I think is a girl based on the fact that her comb looks nothing like that of my pretty much confirmed boy.

#2 ??? in black in the foreground and #3 crested suspected girl in the background on the left. The white one is a polish dorking mix.

#4 Boy Right???

Sorry it's so small. This is the one I am least certain of #2

#2 again

and again

If you ask questions I can tell you more I really don't know what to look for other than comb development and color.

ETA I thought I had a better pic of #2 I will get one and post it later.

Thanks in advance!

tommysgirl, Looking at the wattles will give you the best clue to gender. My cockerels start showing early. In Forsaela's group of five, the most dominate cockerel has the largest, second rank the next to largest and bottom cockerel the smallest....but his are larger than the two pullets of the group. Sometimes the pullets combs (especially single comb pullets) will get pinkish but the wattles will be "the tell" that they aren't cockerels. I was able to tell by 4-5 weeks what they were.
