Icelandic Chickens

for the Macaw egg!

The first time I saw a Modern Game, it was a bantam, I had to ask what if was. They are very odd looking, to say the least!

Mike, I have one broody sitting on one egg too! I candled it the other night and it looks good. Since Forsaela is raising chicks, I put a different Icelandic hen, Fjola, and a BRxAmeraucana hen (lays pinkish beige eggs) in with Falki for company and to break them from being broody. Since the rest of the Icelandics are/were free ranging with a young NH cockerel and a couple Ameraucana cockerels, the only egg I knew that was pure was from Fjola. I put just one under Eyja to see how she would do since it is her first try. The first couple of days she would get off the nest in the morning and get back into the wrong one. Then she settled in and has been doing great. I don't like singletons but I don't want a bunch of chicks heading into the fall/winter either. I hope the one hatches for your hen and for Eyja.........and that they are both pullets.....

X2 on the Macaw egg. Get some more !

Bantam Games are great little birds, if I was going to have chickens as house birds thats what I would go with.

But I did have 3 Icelandic roosters growing out in a big dog crate next to the computer two winters ago. So I guess that they were house birds.

But Bantam Games are way different. A trio would make a nice house colony.

Back to Icelandics, I have a dozen in the incubator now, I think I might add another six or so just to have the numbers that I want going into winter.

The chicken house goes up in Oct, need time this month to get the pad right.

A Macaw egg? Wow! Good luck!

If I ever got bantams, I would definitely go for the OEGB's. I like their feisty personalities

Got two babies out so far, that I am aware of. Another egg is rocking around like crazy. I also checked the eggs under my broody and thought I heard a little "peep".

Yay! Can't wait to see some pictures of the cuties!

Three out so far at my friend's! The fourth was rocking around for a while and is pipped internally, but no external pips, she says. Eep. Nothing yet under my broody, but her eggs are two days behind the ones that went to the incubator.

On another note, one of the chicks that Desert Springs hatched from eggs from my flock has passed. She says it stopped growing after two weeks. That makes three chicks now that have hatched from my flock and had some kind of defect. I'm worried that I have a bird throwing malformed chicks. When possible, I'm going to separate the hens and do a test hatch with the eggs from each. If one of them is producing the weak chicks, she'll get ousted from the breeding flock. And if it's a rooster...............well............there's never a shortage of them, it seems.

Okay, so we got three out of seven eggs that went into the incubator. The fourth egg had a fully developed chick, but died after it pipped internally. My friend sent me a picture, and it had a really high, lopsided vault.

I checked the eggs under my broody. I still have two that are alive and well, but a third egg is completely dark. I can't see an air cell anywhere. That really makes me worry. I would pip a hole in it, but I don't want to hurt the chick if it's fine. Urg..........

I am telling you, I think I'm cursed. Can't remember if I said this already, but my luck with eggs somehow killed my friend's incubator. She had to get a new one overnighted!
