Icelandic Chickens

She sounds like she just wants them to stay where they belong......Good dog!

I'll post a picture of your girlfriend Elska if you post picture of your dog!

Love Sunna's coloring. I hope the herd appraisal goes well.

Elska has been busy raising chicks this year. First she raised an Araucana chick from eggs I got from here (hatched three but two managed to drown in an open water bowl the first day I let them out with the main flock...learned the hard way to keep open water away from week old chicks). She now has 9 German New Hampshires that are from the stock I got from Kathy last spring. She isn't quite her lovely self, but, then who would be with 9 rambunctious youngsters crawling all over you!

But......even with missing tail feathers......she is still striking a pose.........

I can't believe how long this thread is. I have made it through 121 pages so far, of the 627. I keep hoping to find the DNA study results. I am a month past where I expected to find it so far. There's a lot of good information buried in the thread. If anyone ever extracted the information from the thread, it would be helpful, but what an undertaking that would be! It would be nice if BYC gave Icelandic chickens a folder so that information could be found more efficiently. Still, it has been an interesting read so far. :)

Myrth, Here is a link to an article from a European poultry magazine that you may or may not have come across yet on this thread.

I have not seen studies published in English.......that is not to say they don't exist.....just that when I was actively looking, Google Translate versions of what I found were very odd reading.

Here is a link from the United Nations Avian Diversity website that shows genetic information for those that have the knowledge to use it and some general info. Egg color should be white (or cream or light beige).....not brown.
Highlight Icelandic Landrace when you get to the menu box and be sure to "Submit Selection" after highlighting it

Audun, Anna and Asta have been here three years now. Audun turned three the end of March and the hens the first week of May. Mary sent them to me in June of 2010. I have a Silver Laced Wyandotte hen that I got in Sept, after the Icelandics were here. She was hatched earlier in the year so she is the official oldest in age but not in time. Anna raised a clutch of chicks this year but Asta never went broody. They both raised multiple clutches when they were one and two years old. They will have a home for life....not because they are pets, or anything....it's research....you know.....seeing how long they can live......yeah, that's it
