Icelandic Chickens

Good morning. Grima and Asta have got some serious combs, there!

I thought I'd share a picture I took a couple of days ago. I alternate which of my roosters gets to come out for the day, and on this particular day, it was Gunther, my SC Icelandic roo. He wasted no time in going right to our waxberry bushes and pulling the berries off, then calling the hens over and feeding them. What a good boy

A true gentleman.

It has been a bit of a bumpy road trying to get some of these amazing birds, but I am excited to say that I can finally post on this thread with my own pics!
Got these cuties from coldupnorth (thanks again!!) a couple weeks ago:

Originally got seven but had a few unexpectedly pass away on me (only 1 showed any signs of something being wrong)

And hatched this one out from her eggs before that:
There should have been more as the fertility on her eggs was great, but I think my incubator had hidden bacteria since almost every egg was a late quitter

I need some thoughts on if these next two could be Icelandics. I got them as chicks from another user on here who does the egg swap... long story short is that there was a mix up (same as the first time I picked up chicks) and in this batch, that was supposed to be all Icelandic, there turned out to also be a bantam cochin and faverolles....

Would appreciate thoughts on if you think they could be icelandics (maybe they resemble your line, as they came from other users on here) or if you recognize it as another breed. I love that the icelandics are all so different, but in this instance it kinda sucks since I shouldn't use them as breeders as I don't know for certain they're pure.

#1 single comb, white ear-lobe, cream legs

#2 rose comb, white ear-lobe, yellow legs

Cute chicks, I always like the gray, wild type look.

On the two mystery birds, the first doesn't look like an Icelandic body type to me, the second possibly. Unfortunately, since you don't know, you have to assume they are not. They should not be used in your breeding program, nor should they or any of their offspring be considered as anything other than mixed breeds. It makes it more difficult for breeding unless you are able to keep them separated strictly and even then mistakes can happen. Icelandics are extreme escape artists.

Good luck though with your chicks.

Hello, your mystery chick # 1 is definitely definitely a sulmtaler.
Here is one of mine:

I think chick # 2 is also a sulmtaler - your first one is wheaten, and I don't know enough to tell you about the second.
Funny thing: I had eggs hatched for me last May, and there were some mixups, and....I got sulmtalers in the batch. Took me forever to figure out what they are, because they are very very very rare. There is a sulmtaler thread on byc.

If you don't mind, could you pm me re who your eggs came from? I still have some unidentified pullets and if I knew the breeder, perhaps they would recognize the mystery pullets I have! (mine were hatched to order by someone in newbrighton mn who trades eggs, so the eggs didn't come from her, which is why I am trying to find out who the breeder was)

What a great flock master he will make!

I think your spot on with #1 being a sulmtaler, thanks!
#2 though has a rose comb and is noticeably smaller than other breeds same age....
I will pm you to discuss further, but yes, same person! Wonder if you had what I wanted and I had what you wanted...

What cuties!!

Thanks, excited to see them grow. With my luck they will all end up female...

I believe #1 has been figured out, most likely a sulmtaler (I think they had been on her list...) And yes, they will just go with general population in the laying coop.

He's not exactly keen on being touched or held, but he's been good with the hens and any chicks I have running around. My other roo has gotten cranky lately and taken a peck at any chick that intrudes in his space, but this guy just tolerates them - knock on wood. He's always finding food for the ladies. I love it.

Both of them look like right out of my flock, for sure Icelandic, right down to that crest !

Too high of a humidity in the incubator can cause late hatching and low hatches too, been there, done it.

Yup Diva, Sergey and I live together, tomorrow is his birthday and yesterday we had a lunch celebration with a good friend of ours. Before lunch we gave him some gifts, a new Ruger .22 handgun, and some amenities to go along with it. The three of us do a lot of shooting together and he has always had to use one of ours. Which is fine, we want him to learn all of them. He has a girl friend in Israel, working on her PHD, in mathematics. She will finish it in 2 more years, studies and part time teaches, she was here for two months and just went back, hopes to return in Feb, she has 2 job offers already from US universities, so things are going real well for him. BTW, she is an excellent shot too, got her very first lessons here this summer and took off from there.

Mary that little rooster I got from you is an incredible little guy. I have to be careful when I open the pen door or he will fall out before I can pick him up. I have never had such a tame rooster, not ever. I pick him up and he just settles in close, if he was a cat he'd be purring.

He for sure has a forever home. Even if he didnt have a Crest and RC ! But without doubt his temperament needs to be passed on. What a guy ! I am still trying to wrap my tongue around the name you gave him, it seems to fit, if I ever get it right.

The other girls are doing great, the two oldest are the grand dames of the pen, regal looking, and rule tightly. The others are of an age with my pullets and all are growing well. I have a bakers dozen of pullets and hens going into 2014 season, not counting any in the four little ones I hatched from your eggs, still too early to tell, both roos and pullets got a home here for sure.. Right now the most likely Isi line rooster used will be a mottled son of Bjorns, and I may keep a blue backed son of Isis' as backup. Of course Isi will be here with his girls, and I expect to incubate a half dozen or so of theirs.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !
