Icelandic Chickens

Other Mary, I didn't hear or feel a thing -odd because I was at the "Quarry AMC' Watching "Ender's Game." Really loved it too which was a surprise to me. I just went so I could have a future bonding session with me son (( he's in Washington).

Thanks for thinking about me

We've gotten snow a couple of times this week, now, and I keep getting pictures and forgetting to download them. We're only getting a couple of inches down in the valley, but the mountains are getting more than half a foot each time a storm comes through. I like the snow, but there a plenty of folks around here who are grumbling over it. Welcome to the mountains, people

My three babies have been confined to the garage where they have a heat lamp, with all of this cold weather. One of them was a little fluffed up yesterday like she wasn't feeling good, so everyone got a round of vitamins, and the babies got some medicated crumbles today. The one that was struggling already seems to be doing better. I find it funny, though, because even with that nice, warm lamp on all night, I find all three babies perched up somewhere high and away from the lamp and floor - They do this most of the time, in fact. Chickens certainly like their perches. Especially Icelandics.

Hope everyone is doing okay with the cooling weather.

And I'm jealous of the peafowl. Just had to say so.

Other Mary, of the four babies they are looking like 2 Roosters, and two Pullets with one of the Pullets crested. Too early for me to tell on the combs, one is looking wider then the others.

My 6 mos old Lab sits or dances around the door and will give a yip if you arnt paying attention. He is usually close by wherever I am. He wakes me at 5 am if I'm not stirring.

In the spring I may be downsizing, not sure yet, but if I do I wll post it here, will want to rehome the others. I have some extra roosters right now, this years, and a couple mature from last year, so its freezer camp if these arnt rehomed. I have 3 turkeys too that will be joining the freezer camp bunch.

Tis the season, had snow patches on the ground several mornings this week and nights will be in the 2os this week, and on. Days in the 30s on the warm days. Life goes on.

My chocolate cockerel started crowing this week. For just having started, he's got it down pretty good, too. It makes me wonder if he's been practicing for a while and I've just never heard him.............thank goodness for patient neighbors.

Red, I, too, am thankful for my patient neighbors. They have not complained abut the roosters crowing and for that I am grateful!

Jake, Snow on the ground?!

I just got back from a few days in Arkansas visiting my daughter and her family. Our youngest grandson turned one on Thursday......they grow-up so fast!!

I counted heads when I locked-up and everyone was accounted for....yay!!

Mary, Arkansas must have been a nice and warm trip. I just got back from Kalamazoo MI, I had to clean snow off my car Saturday.

I'm thankful for our neighbors too. I did have a group of rather loud SFH cockerels processed a bit earlier than I would liked this year.

I can't wait for spring hatching, I'm ready to start increasing my Icelandic flock size.

I have to say thanks for good neighbors too ! Although neither is real close, one has two acres of woods between us and the other her big garage and she is elderly. I have several roosters that are REALLY loud.

Yes Mary, we have snow, warmer today, in 30s so maybe it will be leaving, but, it will be back, probably over the weekend. Our nights now are in the 20s. I am staying busy winterizing pens, got two water heaters yesterday for the two Icelandic pens, , and putting plastic on the wire fronts of pens and adding more straw to all. The rooster grow out pen I hope will join thee freezer camp this week or next. Needs to be.

Of the four little guys in the basement one does seem to enjoy being held, it meets me at the pen door now, the other three not quite as happy to see me. Just the one crested pullet, looks like one more pullet and two cockerals. Cant tell on the combs yet, hoping for at least one rose comb. One for sure is a SC. The biggest too of course. But have Gose in the layer pen and he will get the job done.

He is still tame, getting daily petting and being held but he is no longer the smallest one, growing quite nicely. Really beautiful fellow, not quite mottled, a big white spot and other patches of color, he could almost be named patches but Gose is better for him. Patches is kind of a clown name. He's not a clown.

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Wow, where is everyone?! It has been a busy week and today will be the same. Much to catch-up-on after being gone and we are short a person at work so I'm working some extra hours. It snowed enough to stick on Monday and the shaded north side areas finally melted off yesterday. I was able to get two contractor bags filled with leaves that I shredded with the blower-vac. I store them in the barn and use them for bedding throughout the winter. The flock loves scratching around the leaf litter, whether inside the coop or outside where it accumulates.

The youngsters are doing great.......looking like there are too many cockerels though.......

I haven't take any pictures of the youngsters but here is one of Galsi from the 1st.....His single comb is all wonky from his crest....I wonder if it will eventually straighten out. Anyone have one that looked like this when young and the crest laid down and the comb stood upright?

Ooops.....off to Chrome to add the pic....

I'm still here. I've just been dealing with some other things. I think the combs on all of my Icelandics have either stayed up straight or have flopped a bit with age.

I'm here. It's busy here, too. Someone dropped off two does to be breed to our buck on Monday. We had dog shows in Columbus,OH Thurs. and Fri., and will be there again Sunday. Today (Sat.). We have a fundraiser for Alzheimer. Thursday's show she took Best of Opposite Sex and Friday she took Best of Breed (she actually defeated the #1 ranked dog!). The chickens are doing well, although a hawk landed in the Maple tree in their run the other day. I think the peafowl scared it off, as I have not seen it since and didn't suffer any loses.
