Icelandic Chickens

They are such carriers, they are also vaccinated against most diseases, I haven't had a problem with disease transfer. They are so tame and a delight to own

I would love to have some, if only to give them a better life. I don't even care if they're spent and no longer lay. I have heard very positive things about rehab'd ex-battery hens. It makes me wish that there were rescues like that around here.

I can safely say that they still lay more eggs than a normal pure breed. They just don't lay as many as they would there first year. I have had hens laying eggs too big to fit in the XXL egg boxes, I also have had a few hens laying 2 eggs a day. They also tend to lay through winter and there eggs are normally always large. I would recommend if you have a battery farm nearby phoning them up and asking if you can take a few spent hens home, normally they enter mind. They also have no fear at first, they learn from the pure breeds but I have had a few hens that will take on a pair of fox hounds and they often win.

Congrats, Mike! She's a pretty girl. I'll bet that was fun to go to

A little of topic but our Icelandic Sheepdog earned her Grand Champion title on Friday, winning Best of Breed. She also won Best of Breed on Thursday.

Congratulations !

She looks smaller then some I have seen, but also certainly looks focused. She looks like she is poised to go after a flock of sheep !

How is she on rounding up chickens?

Iceland has produced some great livestock ! Chickens, horses, sheep and dogs to keep the others in where they belong. I wish I had room for all of them. I'd love to add a couple horses and a dog or two. Alas I am a couple acres short to do it right.
