Icelandic Chickens

Congratulations !

She looks smaller then some I have seen, but also certainly looks focused. She looks like she is poised to go after a flock of sheep !

How is she on rounding up chickens?

Iceland has produced some great livestock ! Chickens, horses, sheep and dogs to keep the others in where they belong. I wish I had room for all of them. I'd love to add a couple horses and a dog or two. Alas I am a couple acres short to do it right.
Thanks Jake. She is actually larger than most females I have seen. She is just over 16 1/2 inches, which the standard calls for. There are many undersized b*tches out there. You probably see ones with the long coat, which can appear larger than they actually are, or males which are 18".

They aren't a threat to the chickens, but they'll put any escapees back into their run. When I free range they'll chase singles or smaller groups back to the larger group. That's one of the things they are used for in tending their sheep, find and return lost sheep to their flock.

I got my first egg from my second Icelandic girl on Thursday! That's it on top of the pile. The pic makes it seem less pointy than it is but it was good sized. Not really pullet size at all. Now both my Icelandic girls are paying their rent

Congratulations! I had never heard of them before so I googled

They sound like a delightful pet and a great farm hand. Do you also have Icelandic sheep?

I was a 4-Her for 10 years and raised Dorsets. I had a couple of Jacob ewes as an adult until a predator got them about 5 years ago. I really enjoyed my sheep.

Congratulations on the new laying pullet tommysgirl!

The dogs do make great pets and help around our little hobby farm. No sheep here, we have a small herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats along with the poultry.

Yes it was the longer coated ones that I have seen.

I have read about them and wanted one for some time, so if any of your contacts in the breed have litters planned I am interested. We have about 2 acres here in a rural area of a small town. Woods on one side and to the back, houses well separated. I travel around quite a bit so it would be with me for that and 24/7 with me the rest of the time.

We have serious winter going on now, 2' of new snow, and in the teens, which it will be for the rest of the week. Tis the season. But, getting half a dozen eggs a day and the pullets just nicely starting, get several of the little eggs each day, after the first of the year it will be over a dozen a day. I do have lights in their pens, plus waterer heaters. A bit better then they had in the Icelandic winters.

Iceland is one of 3 places I want to visit . If I do it right maybe can visit both Iceland and Ireland on one trip. A lot of food for thought there !

Merry Christmas all, and to all a good time.

Jake

Thanks...I found another from her on the front porch day before yesterday. I think it surprised her.

Do icelandics swim well, as my stream does flood so my Wyandottes sometimes go swimming, seeing as if icelandics are land run birds I presume they will roam and I don't want them to fall in and drown, my frizzle rooster did that and I had to run in to haul him out

This is snowflake paddling about like a duck
