Icelandic Chickens

So remember my silver chick from the three I'm raising right now? Yeah, it's getting pretty suspiciously roo-colored. The shiny blue feathers are coming in on the wings, and unless my eyes mistake me, the hackles are starting to look pointed. This is the mottled one I was so excited about, so I'll be sad if I have to let it go. Some of the hackles almost look like they have some black barring on them, too. I'll have to get some pictures.

Mary - I'm with you on the winter being harsh this year. Almost all of my chickens have some degree of frostbite on the tips. Even my Icee Fridrick, who even with his big comb has always been good about getting it under his wing. Too much cold, too early! Our high today is going to be -10*F. Our son must think its warm, however, because he just headed outside with shorts and a T-shirt. Crazy teens!

I hope all of you are staying warm and safe!

Only chicken In the chicken yard today is...

the concrete one!

Everyone else was hanging out in the coop.......not the best place for pics but here are a couple of Forsaela's daughters........since Jake won't post any of his........

The only rose comb pullet I kept....Gaela:

The only mottled one I kept...Glora:

And the blue, non-crested pullet.....Glima:

Missing is Gola who was up in the rafters already.....maybe next time.......

.......and Galdur, older brother to the above pullets. He has a bit of damage to the front of his wattles from drinking from an open dish in this bitter cold. Anyone have a solution to this? I tried applying Vaseline but they are not easy to catch.....especially after they have been "doctored" the first time! Is this something that is just a "fact of life" for chickens living in the far north? Audun is also suffering with this.

Nice pics Mary. I've never had any with frostbite on the wattles, just the comb. Its still warm here, we were aboving freezing today, and warmer tomorrow. Then the cold arrives Sunday night and sticks around until Wednesday.

"Other Mary, beautiful birds - my favorite is Gaela - love her coloring.

We are supposed to be -12 below for a high on Monday and low of -18, pretty much the same on Tues. Not so bad but from today thru tomorrow 5-10 inches of more snow - big difference, wish they were more specific.
