Icelandic Chickens

Hi Mike! Made it to Texas and Arkansas to visit with my folks, brother and SIL and DD, SIL and grandbabies.....well, the three year old granddaughter would probably tell you she is NOT a baby.......

.....anyway, we had a great time and returned to MUCH LESS snow than we left behind!
yippiechickie.gif
There is an 80% chance of some snow in the next couple of days but things are looking much more like Spring than Winter!!
woot.gif
.....now to get some of those hens to sit on some eggs for me.........

I see there is a "Most Striking Domestic Male Fowl" contest on the Easter Hatchalong.....and you don't have to be a participant of the Hatchalong (but why aren't you?).....are there any domestic male fowl more striking than an Icelandic rooster?! I think not! Get the cameras out and get over there and post your picture(s) of your Icelandics!! Mary, OH MARY O, I talking to you.....and to everyone else reading this that has an Icelandic male.....you can only enter one rooster but can post three pictures of him to show him off.......get some pics and let's show BYC that the most striking males belong to the Icelandic landrace!!!

Agghh.....I tried to post the link but I'm on IE and not Chrome.......oh the agony........

Oh, I'm a participant in the Easter hatch a long, everyone should join, set day for chickens is 3/29. I can't enter contests as Sally Sunshine and I are assisting Happy Chooks with the hatch a long. I would love to see the rest of you enter your favorite Icelandic Roosters.

I'm glad you had a good trip. Someday your three year old granddaughter will be claiming "baby rights" . My twenty something (21 and 26) year old nieces sure enjoy being grandma's baby's now.

Best Hatch Participant - The most supportive member in the Hatch-a-long will win a 1 year GFM!

Guess How Many Eggs Will Hatch - Will be opening soon.

Thank You to @Sally Sunshine and @mlmddh for helping me with this Hatch-a-long again this year!

Good news and bad news! Bad news first: so several weeks ago, I got home from work and went to check on the chicks... one had gotten stuck behind the water dish/bottle thing and had died. I have no idea how it died from that so quickly... its head was clearly out of the water. I wonder if it was exhausted from trying to get out? Who knows. One of those learning moments I guess!

Good news! I believe one out of the remaining three is a hen. So I have one hen and two roos. I am guessing based on the bright red wattles (still right next to their beaks, but certainly red). All three have lovely coloring!

Mike, the trouble maker, has a contest for the Easter Hatchalong that requires a picture, taken in the past year, of chickens in the snow. I didn't have any 'cuz it's been too ___ cold to be out taking pictures. I heard a commotion outside so grabbed the camera since the chickens were obviously outside the coop. I looked out the window, Audun had a group of hens on the west side of the house in the L P/water spigot path and they were crowded into the end of the path with him in front of them. I don't know for sure but I am guessing he saw a hawk in flight and called for cover.......but there isn't anything much for cover this time of year. When he heard me come out the front door, camera in hand, he lead them toward the barn.

Then I heard a noise by the LP tank...

Asta (one of my original hens) and Gola (Forsaela x Falki pullet) were in the bushes that surround the LP tank. None of the other hens would cross the snow to get into the bushes.....only one of the other hens/pullets was an Icelandic. The others were the New Hampshires and my one Araucana. Asta was taking the threat seriously and was still in the bush when I coaxed Gola out.

Then Asta gets out but has to take a good look before she'll head to the coop/barn

Gola headed into the barn and Audun followed her in..

Asta decided to go around to the back door. That is the preferred way in and out when the weather in nice and I leave a section of the fence down when I am home and they are out.

Hmmmm.....why is the fence up and how to get back in the coop?

Up and over.......

...........or maybe just use the fence to cross the snow!

.......or maybe not.......the fence didn't make the best tightrope......
so she quit about a third of the way across.....she just sat there.......

~~so I went over and picked her up and brought her inside for a treat of mealworms for helping me get a photo for Mike's contest.....thanks Asta!

Asta will be 4 years old in May.....Audun will be 4 this month......still lovin' 'em like I did the day I got 'em!
Thanks Mary!
You should enter picture #7 and #9 into the contest! It's a beautiful shots!

What snow? Oh yeah, we had our first and only snow in November.

Wonder if Mike would allow this?

Maybe this?

OK, Icelandics in the snow.

Briefly.
Both of these should be entered also.

I was thinking I would, perhaps, enter #9 in the flapper contest......but I'll enter #7 in the "in the snow" contest.
