Icelandic Chickens

Gorgeous flock and photos Mary. Love to see all that green and the flock out enjoying it. Sunshine will come, so I keep telling myself. Wet, wet, wet here. My wife doesn't ask me if it's going to rain, but what time it's going to rain each day. We have been somewhat fortunate in that we have had two hour breaks from rain in the morning and evening to get milking and chores done.

ace, I'm too far away from you or I'd say "Come on over and get a couple". I always seem to hatch more cockerels than pullets. I only got 8 chicks from the EHAL.....we'll see what the ratio is on them. Glora is on two of her own eggs and I am excited to see what those will look like since she has plumage unlike any other Icelandic I've had. With five Icelandics on the nest or raising chicks, the egg numbers are dropping...

Yeah, Mike, you told me so.....

Haha. Thanks! But yes... a drive to Illinois is out of the question. haha. I have the unlucky rooster hatching voodoo... 80-85% of my hatches have been roosters.

Ace, I may have a pullet you can take. She's quite wild, but a few months old.

One of my Wyandottes went broody again. Guess who got some Icelandic eggs to sit on?

I will take her from you if you're trying to get rid of her! Just pm me and we'll work something out.

I also have a broody. Am trying to get some eggs... She started sitting on some infertile eggs about 5 days ago, and I just left them. I haven't found eggs to put under her that are fertile yet. Will she still be ok if I find eggs tomorrow to give her? Will she still hatch them?

Ace, we'll figure something out. I've been pretty busy, so sorry for the delay in response! I am tempted to just ship some Icee eggs to you. My Wyandotte went broody and I gave her some, but the dope keeps moving off them. Arrg! Fine, no babies for her.

Haha. That would work. I'm just getting nervous cause she's already been there for a week!!! I hope she doesn't get tired of laying on infertile eggs or get off the fertile ones early!

Any Icelandic enthusiests out there looking for a cockerel/future rooster ? I have 2 that are 5 weeks old $12. each. Located in Upper Michigan near the Wisconsin border.

Nah, if she's been there for a week, I think you have a good chance of her staying.

Ok. Good. I've also read of hens who are broody too long that get sick. I don't want that to happen either...! I just got 6 eggs from a coworker... So I think I'm good without you sending eggs. Thanks for the offer though!!!!!

Yeah, I feed and water my broodies while they're setting. I worry about them sitting too long, too.
