Icelandic Chickens

Icelandics have a certain look about them and are fairly small as adults, like how a Polish chicken is small next to a BR. I hate to say it, but if you aren't 100% certain a bird is Icelandic, I would just consider it a mix.

That was my thought as well, I was sure about 2 (saw them hatch and tagged), but the 3rd will likely always remain a mystery. So, I decided to try one more hatch lol...I know its late, but I really want an icie flock! :)

At 2 days, now almost 2 weeks!

Thanks for the welcome. Happy to be here!

Drumstick Diva- thanks. My sultan girl Tilly around 5-6 weeks. I have a thing for odd birds.

Eleda, I love them! So pretty.

I am pretty much obsessed with the color of this chick of mine. Really light silver. Almost like my lav am as a tiny chick (except he didn't have a yellow belly, of course).

And here they are today!

They are terribly cute! I've never seen a head tuft that large on one, though. Please forgive me for asking, but do you have Silkies or Polish among your mixes?

LittleChickSpy, your silver chick is very pretty! It will be fun to see how it turns out, for sure.

No problem! They hatched with a bunch of Cochin mutts(from a different seller), but these two were definitely marked "I"; the black one was 1st to pip, but had quite a bit of trouble hatching, and the yellow was a surprise 2 days later, last of the bunch. One other " I " hatched while I was at work, but we're just not sure which of two it is, so we're just calling it two Icelandics and ordering one last batch of eggs! :)

Did the eggs come from your flock or did you buy them? The skull on the black seems to be vaulted which is not a characteristic I've heard of in Icelandics.

In the group below, the pullet on the front right is the pullet in the second and third picture. Even large crested Icelandic individuals don't have vaulted skulls from what I have seen.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Mary. I wouldn't trust that chick to be pure :(

This is what worries me about the breed becoming more widespread - what's to stop people from mixing breeds and then claiming the birds are pure? I don't want to see something happen like what has gone down with the Houdans breed.

I purchased them from someone with 3 lines, a breeder I have confidence sent me what I paid for.
If there was a mistake it would have been mine, but they were marked when I received them, and I sure stared at that egg for a long time lol!

But, I definitely hear your concerns, and appreciate the input from everyone! We'll just keep the rascal with my kids' mixes and I'll put some photos up in a few months. Im getting a batch that will be hatching in their OWN incubator this time ;) (behl).

This is NOT where I got him, but I did find this photo of a vaulted icie when I searched it? http://www.berrytanglefarm.com/icelandics/
