Icelandic Chickens

Well, I was about to post more pictures of the cockerel in the middle that some were unsure of, asking for more opinions, but.... while I was taking the photos, he crowed, so...

I was pretty sure before, anyway.

Here's the other guy. I still feel he hast tobe a cockerel, but you're the experts!

Here he is with another cockerel, for comparison:

Here's my other cockerel that could possibly be a question.I think he's too pretty to be a girl, even though his comb is smaller and paler than the other guys. My girls definitely all seem more plain right now.

Other Mary - Our daughter brought the GNH that we hatched from you to the county fair this year. He won Best of Show in open class for the whole Poultry Barn (100+ birds). Not the greatest photo - but he is a very beautiful and calm bird. His name is Bob.
Congratulations to your daughter, and to Bob!

And, while I'm here - One of my easter eggers got herself trapped upside down earlier today & got overheated & dehydrated. She recovered super quickly after a cool bath and some time in the air conditioning, so I took her back outside about an hour ago. Although I have always intended for my Icelandics to be my free range chickens, I wanted them to grow up a bit more first. They had other plans. At least half of them were out of their pen!

I let them enjoy it for a few minutes, and snaped a few photos, before rounding them all back in. So glad my LGD puppy was penned (she broke into their pen this past Sunday & was carrying my sweet silver pullet (below) around in her mouth! So thankful the pullet wasn't injured. Some livestock guardian (I know, I know. Puppy.). Don't mind the grass, we're letting it grow in preparation for our sheep. Or, at least that's our excuse.

So, we have a 5 foot chainlink fence around the area where these guys will be "pastured." We do have hawks and even an eagle in the neighborhood. Too risky to let the little guys have daily free time, you think? I wasn't really planning on it until they were about 3 months old (they're 7.5 weeks now).

I´ve got 32 Icelandic eggs in the incubator now. Out of 36 ordered 32 made it intact. Have hopes of hatching a good starter flock of them and maybe getting more eggs from another line to add diversity. Bonus is they came packed in some kind of wool (alpaca maybe?). I will use that coyote trapping this winter (they like the smell and it holds scents well) so the packing will help protect the chicks twice over. Just nervously waiting and monitoring temperature now.

and to the Icelandic Chickens thread!! Please keep us posted on how your hatch goes!

Yes, x2, a great looking, colorful group!
These are the first Icelandics that I've hatched this year (only other batch of chicks I hatched was layers for my DD's 4H).

Hraun is the daddy to most of them ;) Thanks, Other Mary! The picture of Hraun is from last Fall, so he has filled out nicely!
He is sooooo handsome, Laurie!! It is always my pleasure to "share the love"!!

Congrats to your daughter!!

My GNHs came from Kathyinmo and they are truly striking representatives of the New Hampshire breed. I hope your daughter will continue with them.

Congrats, Laurie! Wow, pretty roo, and cute daughter

And congrats on the new batch of chickies! They look wonderful.

Mike, love the flock picture. You have a lot of blue genetics in your birds. Very pretty!

Don't the blues run stronger in the Behl line? Anyone?
The blues in my line came from Mary, The Sheriff, via Sigrid. The mottling in my line came from the pullets I got from The Sheriff via Marty Favre via Lyle Behl.

Gula decided she has had enough of being a momma and has weaned her two chicks. I have them in a coop awaiting the rest of the mommas to wean the others. I will keep them together awhile and hope they form their own cohesive group and then reintroduce them to the main flock. Now I will be able to get some close-ups of each of them without the hens scurrying away with them or worrying about getting flogged!

Good to see this thread active again.

Now that I can see their whole bodies, yep, they all look like males. It's harder to tell from only a head shot.

LCS, gorgeous juveniles!

Thank you all for the info on the blues. I will be excited if any blue surfaces in my flock. I've had a few blacks hatch before, but no blues as of yet.

I switched my boys around again. I've got one of my SC hens with my SC roo. Hope she decides to give me a few eggs! Most of my flock is RC.

Good Morning Icelandic Lovers!

I have two more broodies.

They both started sitting Labor Day weekend so I gave them each two eggs and announced to the rest of the flock that there would be NO MORE sitting until Spring 2015 arrives....we'll see whether or not they listened.....
Gula is the only one that has weaned her chicks. The other three mommas are still busy teaching their chicks what-is-what around the yard.

We had some rain the last couple of days and now the weather is cooler and feeling like fall. Have a great weekend everyone!
