Icelandic Chickens

Hi, everyone. It has been a loooong time since I posted (going on a year). Finally (waited so many years!), we are preparing to get our chickens, because I was given the green light and have put in my order for organic soy & corn free chick starter and feed. :) I know you all suggested Berrytangle Farms. I'm in Vancouver, WA - this is really more like Portland, Oregon than Washington state because we are 5 minutes away from Portland. Are there any other Icelandic breeders that are closer? If not, that's fine and we'll go ahead with them - on the Pacific Northwest Poultry group another was suggested but they were two hours farther than Berrytangle. It would be amazing if I could visit; Berrytangle is biosecure so that's not an option for visiting.

Love all the Icelandic pics!!

Hello all
Haven't checked in in a while hope all is well. I ended up with 6 roosters and 4 pullets. All of the roosters are beautiful. Im making arrangements to keep them all but if any of you are around Ozark Alabama ill give you one for free.

Very nice, Deputy! These two are my favorites. They are hard to photograph.....always got somewhere to go!

I have been having a hard time getting any decent pictures of mine, too.

I did this one of a pullet hatched the end of June. She is the spitting image of one of my two original hens, Anna.

You guys, I'm so sad. I was going to order my chicks from Berrytangle Farms this year. I just saw they posted on facebook an hour ago that they are suspending operations for 2015 and refunding orders due to the AI outbreak that has been going on and currently spreading, as a precautionary measure. While I admire them for doing this, now I don't know where to get my Icelandics. I only know of one other operation, "Just Fowling Around", that has Icelandics (anyone have experience with them?). Please let me know if there are any other good breeders in my area. I am in Vancouver, Washington - just 5 minutes from Portland, Oregon.

Is there a reason you want to pick up locally and not ship? I don't know of anyone in your immediate area. You could have better luck if you were to get hatching eggs shipped to you.

Sorry to hear about your cancellation. There are many reputable dealers out there but most are booked up already. All of my eggs and birds come from Whippoorwill Farms. David Grote is an honest man and has some beautiful birds. There is a group on Facebook" Icelandic chickens". Thee is a list on the page with all known American breeders. Best of luck!!!

Several reasons, but mostly to avoid the stress of shipment on chicks and for the experience. That said, there is another breeder (not Icelandics) 20 minutes from me that knows Just Fowling Around that has offered to incubate some hatching eggs from JFA for me. I don't have an incubator, and shipping eggs sounds a lot less stressful (for the future birds, I mean) if one has to ship. So I may just go that route.
