Icelandic Chickens

Mary how come your grass has little tinges of green to it. We've had some warm days even one 72, and now rain and still no green spots.

But the maple trees in the area are starting to grow those wormy looking little blossoms(?) that clog up the gutters. Actually everything a Maple puts out clogs the gutters.
Our neighbors tree in his backyard fills the gutters from behind. The people across the street have 4 in a row that aim for the front gutters.

I am NOT a Maple fan.
Must be the chicken fertilizer I've been using!

I'm with you on the "maple hate"

No maples here, oaks (burr and white), shagbark hickories, mulberry, elder are native to our place. We added cherry, apple, peach, heartnut, hemlock and thuja......no maples!!

All seven of the Icelandic eggs that made it to lockdown hatched.

I put them under Heppni, who has been locked on the nest for only two days, so we will see what happens.

It'll all be green soon. Then it'll need to be cut.

I thought that's what the chickens were for? :p

Yay! Come on, Heppni.

If it makes you feel better, I feel the same about Siberian Elms. They're EVERYWHERE.

Yay! Come on, Heppni.

Hope Heppni adopts them.

Thanks everyone! I looked back at my post here and she was on the nest three whole days after having spent a couple of nights but not full days on the nest......I peeked in on them when I locked-up the coop and so far so good!!

I put Hvit and her singleton silkie chick out in the chicken tractor this afternoon for some sunshine. They did a good job of returning to the coop when I let them out. I had to help the chick figure out the ramp up (flat board with a 8 inch rise) but I'm sure it will be getting around much better as it gets bigger.

Congratulations!!! You are so lucky to have Hepni and Hvit brood your babies! My life has been consumed (in a very fun way) with brooding babies these last couple of weeks. I want a BROODY!!! I put three new nest boxes in just to give the girls more variety. No luck! Sigh... Waiting for the magic to happen!

I don't hate brooding chicks or anything, but I am just really, really excited about seeing babies and mama together...

Mary, when do we get to see some baby pics? I want to show my babies their cousins. Lol!

Quote: Thanks, Kathleen! Do you have fake eggs in your nest box? I have a dozen golf balls and a dozen white plastic "easter" eggs (plastic, two halves filled with sand). I usually have one in each of my 12 nest boxes. I collect eggs daily.(they lay in three or four of the twelve boxes). I choose a box that is not a favorite and put three fakes in. Each day I leave another one or two. The hens will often start laying in that box. I collect eggs but continue to increase the number of fakes until there are 12. Someone will go broody, unable to resist the pile!! Heppni is the same age as Hetta, Harpa and Happ so one, or all, of them should be going broody soon.

I got a couple incubator pics of the newly hatched chicks but will have to get some of them with Mom.

Mary, I didn't know you had a silkie. I hope she grows up to a SHE, and a great broody.
Diva, Each year, for the Easter Hatchalong, I try to hatch something that is not an Icelandic. This year I got four eggs from someone I know that has silkies (if fact, she has one I hatched). She found a stash of eggs and gave me four. Unfortunately, two were old and one was clear. Here is Hvit with her singleton silkie.
