Icelandic Chickens

I love Thelma and Louise.

I'm taking my eggs home now to unwrap them and give them a closer inspection.

I have been following this thread quietly for a while now. I have a question; as the icelandics fly pretty well do you attempt to keep them in a run or do you let them free range? My run is 6ft high, but not covered (girls are locked up at night) and my current flock do not fly well enough to get out. I would assume the icelandics would just fly out. I would like to let them free range everyday and close them up at night. Do they return to the coop each night for you or will I find them roosting in the trees? I am looking forward to starting my own little flock this summer! I have really enjoyed seeing your birds and reading all of the information that you have shared!

Thanks for the interest! My birds have been known to fly over a four foot fence but it is primarily my Icelandic/EE cross, Stella who flew over my fence from being wild and got me started on Icelandics. Everybody else pretty much stays home. If I have a determined flyer when they are babies I clip a wing and that usually solves the problem. I free range mine on two to four acres depending on which gate is open. The fence is only four feet high but so far no one has gone over. They will find every little opportunity to go under or around so we have had to beef up the perimeter fencing on our property in several places. Mine all return to the coop at night. I raise them as juveniles in a fenced and covered run so they just learn from an early age to go home at night. We have no large trees on the back part of our property so that also cuts down on the issue. My roo Isi is a stickler for compliance with the rules and will get down off the roost numerous times to shuffle stragglers back in.

My Icelandics are in a covered (netting) pen. By history, though they will roost as high as they can get, they have never flown outside their pen, over the 6 foot fence. I have the netting on as a precaution. I have several different breeds, and they all take turns free ranging.

How big is your coop? I get to get a new coop built but I need to give a bit of direction on size.

Mary, I saw your barn make-over but how much space are you using for the coop area and how much for the brooder area? I love the nest boxes, as that was what I had envisioned so I'm glad to see the design works

I like you feeder too. We have been talking about copying it, but what did you lay over the tray to keep them from spilling out all the feed? It looks like 1/2" wire (bunny wire)?

Kathy, I'm guessing you have more than one because you have so many different (and all very beautiful) birds.

Mine coop will have some mixed layers, blue and brown eggs, plus my Icelandics. I would like to just let them pick thier own partners and free range the pasture like Mary's do. I have 5 acres, although part is fenced off for my dogs. Otherwise the chickens will only have to share with a few turkeys (for now). I want to set up automated pop doors, some gravity fed waterers and a big feeder. Mine will have to be insulated and heated (I only keep heat on when it's below zero, I don't want the inside to be too different from the outside, so they don't get shocked when they come and go.

Any input and suggestions would be appreciated.
