Icelandic Chickens

As a disclaimer, Kathy's Icelandics have been known to scale the brooder walls!

Yes they do! Starts at a young age! I have one little rooster that started crowing before he was 4 weeks old, too. I just crack up every time I hear his wimpy attempts.

They all got moved to new quarters yesterday and are quite happy exploring the area.

Isn't it fun trying to figure out what you just heard?

I just heard something strange but I could see Thurston and Isi at the time so it is somebody else. Maybe one of the rock dwellers. They tend to fly under the radar and stay to themselves. They have pretty much joined ranks with the Thanksgiving babies now. I am happy to see that because the Thanksgiving babies tended to range out in the open all day. There is much more protection around the granite outcroppings. I have never had one crow at four weeks though!

I think I'm going to set them up in their own quarters (DH brought home a huge shipping crate) and let them free range once they know where home is. Thanks for the information!!

Oh, and Kathyinmo I'll keep a top on my brooder

That doesn't always work either. This little guy got out a tiny 2"x2" opening in the top of the brooder. See it in the back left hand corner? The brooder is ten inches deep so he had to helicopter out.

I have read through the thread.

I've been keeping chickens on and off for a bit over 60 years.

Starting new flocks of two LF Heritage Chickens this year, probably also some Heritage Turkeys, was a founding member of American Minor Breeds Conservancy and through two name changes.
