Icelandic Chickens

Kathy, You've got quite the collection there! Lots of blues/grays.........Beautiful!
Your F1s are cuties.......not as cute as the Icelandics mind you......but cute!

Lynn, I hope my eggs get there tomorrow!! I can't wait to see how they were treated by the USPS.

Congrats Michelle on getting eggs from Mary. Keep us posted on their progress!

I want some whites, and some crests! Is that asking too much?

I like all of the colors, lean towards the wheatens and partridge painted, but to date my favorite is the matron Luuka(sp?)
she is my poster girl, I do love the tall red mixed colored roos, great looking birds. I am also interested in finding out what the egg production is and if it can be selected for, I dont know why not.First need a dozen or so hens to start counting eggs from . Hoping to get some eggs this spring.

Rose Comb RIRs are a project for me, it will be, handling the same as the Icelandics I hope to get started, in pairs or trios. These are the ones that my grandmother had and we got out chicks from , and the breed I had later, sure wish I'd had some of my grandmothers to start with. Your F1 hens are really gorgeous Kathy, great start! What were the parents?

Me again,

Kathy are the chicks pictured the F2s?? They certainly are docile and inquisitive. I believe strongly in handling all chicks, bunnies and other youngsters, saves many problems later.

Are any of your hens from Luuakas eggs?? I got to learn how to spell her name right ,

, she is close to 'the standard for a hen' to me right now.

Mary how many hens do you have now from her?

Hi, my name is Cindy and I live in Northwestern CT. We've been raising chickens for about 8 years now and we still have one of the original girls!

My brother was among the shepherds that went to Iceland in 2003 along with Lyle Behl when he brought the Icelandic chicken eggs to the US to hatch. He acquired some of the offspring from the original eggs and has been raising them up in Northern Maine. Just this weekend he brought me 21 eggs to hatch myself (which I have done with other breeds) and I'm thrilled to have them. It was quite a drive down, so I'm waiting to see how many actually make it.

My concern is genetics. He said the heartiest ones survived their -40 degree winters, but they appear to be getting smaller. With all the in-breeding I'm afraid their quality is suffering. I have a nice sized Araucana/Favorelle mix rooster, but I really don't want to mix non-icelandics with icelandics. What I'm hoping for is that perhaps there is someone in New England with Icelandics who would be willing to do an egg swap (once mine are old enough to lay) to improve the gene pool for both our flocks. I'd be happy to swap chicks, but I'm not sure what kind of red tape there may be bringing poultry across state lines.

If there is anyone out there, I'd be willing to meet halfway - I've never shipped eggs, and don't want to risk these babies! I'm thinking MA, NH, RI, NY, NJ, PA. Any ideas, suggestions are welcome.

Hey everyone, I wanted to repost Cindy's request just in case anyone has some spare eggs to send her or some chicks! She posted early last year and hasnt gotten any yet. I don't have eggs right now or I'd send her some.
