You have to see the baby chick I tried to kill. Background Info:

Eggs incubated for about 2 weeks until my wheaten AM went broody. I put six eggs from the incubator under her with a week left to go. I took two out that were obvious quitters leaving two BCM/AM crosses and two pure AM's. It was a circus sideshow with the broody being kicked out of the nest for others to lay. I took out so many extra eggs and kept finding the viable ones off in the corner in the cold. On hatch day I found them alone and stone cold. I brought them in and put them back in the incubator. Yesterday was Day 24 so I decided to candle them. I could see movement in one AM so I put it back. I opened up the AM and the BCM cross to find perfectly formed dead chicks. The BCM had yellow liquid and was getting stinky. I tossed them. I opened a small hole in the last BCM cross and shined my flashlight in. No sign of life. I chipped away a little bit of shell and made a pretty large opening. The baby had pipped internally. I noticed a tiny bit of movement so I put it back. Nothing happened for several hours so I chipped away a bigger piece of shell. This time I hit a vein and got quite a bit of bleeding. I got that stopped and put it back for a few more hours. Yesterday it had moved enough in the shell that I could see the whole yolk! It was not absorbed at all! So I put the left the baby in the incubator overnight and this morning I could see that some of the yolk had absorbed. The chick was totally matted and stuck in other by gunk, dried blood and membrane. When I could tell most of the yolk was absorbed, I gingerly pulled the membrane away and within hours the baby was out. He was the worst looking chick I had ever seen. I was sure he was going to die all day. Couldn't stand of course and kept rolling over on his back. Somehow over the course of the day he managed to dry off a bit and fluff up except for his wings. He still has a hard time standing and not flipping on his back but what a little fighter he is! It looks like the baby got some of Thurston's blue coloring. I sure hope it makes it. It is the tiniest chick I have ever seen except for my bantam game babies.

Edited to add I am going to try opening the last AM egg. I can't see any movement now when I candle but there was some this morning. Today is the end of Day 25. Wish me luck.

I just knew I should have popped an air hole in that late pipper.

But nooooo. I didnt and this morning there was no noise in the egg so I opened it and sure enough, #3 didnt make it.

He was just not in a good position to get his beak close enough to the shell to pip. *sigh*

Next time I listen to my gut! Ugh.

Oh, how I'd love a roo like Ari and a hen like Lukka.

I'll just be happy with Vindur... he's really getting pretty and his two off white pullets look the same.
