Icelandic Chickens

No Cheryl, it is an Icelandic. I only have two CS left, one just went on lockdown and they other is a single hatch on the 26th.

I just made the decision to give the little Icelandic hatchling to it's momma Lukka. I am watching carefully but she seems to be doing ok with it. If it scoots out from under her she nudges it back. But, she still has three wooden eggs under her as well. I wonder if I should remove those and just leave her with the chick? She is probably more likely to keep the chick under her and warm if she is still protecting eggs. Jeeze, hatching with broodies is supposed to be easier!

I looked at that bator crammed to the rafters with precious eggs and decided to stick with the plan and let Lukka take care of her baby and I'll take care of mine. So 24 MF leghorns and 1 Coronation Sussex are on lockdown in the Brinsea Advance. I am about to hook up the humidity pump. The Easter hatch are in the Brinsea ECO with the turner. By the way, I bought and extra turner for the second brooder and it came last night at 7:00 pm the night before lockdown! That will do me a lot of good! Thanks Brinsea and your SLOW UPS ground shipping. Only took nine days!

Be back after I humidify the eggs.

Here is a pic of the baby just before putting him back with momma:

I never thought when I got up this morning we would have a chick!

Ok UPDATE: The baby chick is back in the incubator. Lukka is sitting too tight on the eggs and it looked like it was getting squished. It is just very weak. So I had to stack some eggs in the lockdown incubator to make a little corner for the chick. I ca't put it in the other incubator becuase the turner is on. Crazy day!

Hubby took Jake's eggs to the post office this morning so I could stay home and fret over the baby chick. Hope they arrive Monday Jake. I am now collecting for Shawn. After that shipment, if the fertility rate is good, I am going to start charging for the eggs and sending the money to Johanna in Iceland!

I have to go rest. My nerves are frayed from being broody all day!

So far so good with the incubator and hatcher, added a little water to them , not a lot. The incubator got down to about 20%, trying to keep it up around 30%.

Life is good !

Thanks so much !

A little bit coming for the Icelandic fund. How much will you be charging per egg? I was thinking of doing the same thing here with the 4H'ers who want chicks, one girl will probably get a trio of the springs hatch .
