Icelandic Chickens

Mary, how is the chick in the egg? is there any bleeding? the first picture looked like an egg i have seen where the chick was trying to hatch but the lining wasn't tearing as easy as the shell was breaking. If there is no bleeding I would go ahead and help peel the baby out of the egg and put it in with any babies no more than a day old in your brooder and just let it dry overnight. I would do this after dark because the other babies do less pecking when they cant see, and when the new one is fluffy and dry they usually wont peck him at all. All the best and I hope he makes it. We all end up with these stories..... remember when I had the baby sleeping on my chest for a few nights. It could feel me waking up and would start chirping before my eyes would open! It turned out to be a little hen with a cute crest!

I think Kathy is right, there is a good chance he will rally, I had one little brown one that I thought would die, he was shrink wrapped and I got him out, he dried and seemed fine, but he slept a lot more than the rest and every day I was prepared for him to die, he is till alive and now as active as the rest and today was first to the feeder at evening feeding! Sorry I didn't get my advice in until later but it looks like you had the same idea!

Mary how do you like your Brinseas? I LOVE mine! The humidity regulator is a great improvement over others from my experience.

Doing my reading here, and I understand that Icelandic chickens are good flyers, they don't just like free range, they like open range ... so my next question is people with limited space, house lots..etc. how do you keep this breed, do you keep their wings clipped, or keep them in an enclosed run too avoid them visiting the neighbors ?

In Iceland they roamed the homestead, even in the winter, spending a lot of time on the manure piles, wasnt much for them to forage on in the Icelandic winters so they stuck to home with some scant feeding, how they would fare here in our closer homes I dont know but I am sure that a couple times a day feeding and confining them at night is doable.

I am kind of neutral Andy. I lost several hatches in my Advance only to find out that, even though the digital readout read 99.5, the actual temperature was several degrees cooler. Brinsea refused to fix it because I didn't mail in my registration card! It was 3 months old! Mind you the top had already been replaced under warranty after arriving damaged. I cited the law that states any company selling goods in CA cannot require a warranty card be sent in to honor the warranty. It goes so far as to say the state discourages people from filling the cards out because they are used primarily to obtain personal information. Brinsea responded that they still do not honor warranty if the card is not mailed back or the product registered online. Again, I showed them that the law states that all one needs is proof of purchase date and the warranty must be honored. I wrote to everyone at Brinsea, including Pasquale, and they as much as told me they could not care less! So I have to set the temperature very high and verify with a thermometer. Waste of nearly $500.00. I could have gotten a Styrofoam incubator, several actually. Since jacking the temp up I have had more successful hatches but I still despise the company and their lack of integrity. I have an open case against them with CA State Dept. Consumers Affairs. I want them to rule that Brinsea can no longer sell to residents of CA if they refuse to obey the laws. They only reason I bought the second auto-turner is that I already have the incubator.

My fences are only four feet high and they Icelandics stay in without having their wings clipped, with one exception.

They like to wander and explore and will find ways to go through fences but I really haven't had an issue with them going over. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself.

I just checked on my little chickie. He is starting to barely lift his head off the floor of the incubator. I guess I'll know more tomorrow.

Mary, I think the little guy is a fighter and I hope he will rally. If he makes it, with that "comb over" you will have to name him The Donald!

Ryan, Sorry to hear you had such a poor hatch. You had your own EEs in with them right? Were the only ones that hatched the early ones? I remember you saying that one of your EEs was first to pip. How many of them hatched?

Yeah, but Stella is only half Icelandic, so she doesn't count.
