Icelandic Chickens

Thanks Mary. I am so happy she accepted him. That means I have to raise more in the brooder and that was the lone Icelandic so he will grow up where he will live. I'll raise the others in a brooder then turn them loose in the fenced and covered yard. It would have probably been harder to move them up here after they free ranged had I let Lukka hatch them. So, it all works out in the end. Or, at least until this little one realizes he'll be sat on until he has babies of his own!

Hey Mary, how are my Icelandic girls doing? I can't wait until I get home so I can come get them!

Anybody wanna wager how long it will take them to escape?

Saw my predator that took my hen up close and personal yesterday. Turns out it's not a fox, it's a bobcat. Just when I was feeling comfortable it wasn't going to be back. (it's been almost 3 weeks) I think it was going for the trap until I scared it off - chickens were squawking like heck, so I went down to check it out and I saw it. I'm a little worried about it being out during the day though, I thought they were nocturnal. DH got me some game load for the shotgun and showed me how to load it just in case, but I've never fired the shotgun - hopefully it doesn't knock me on my butt. Can't be worse than a 30-06 right? I've fired it before - gave me a heck of a welt on my shoulder.

Kelly hold it tight into your shoulder and it wont give you welts, not one shot or two. Keep it handy to be grabed. I like the .22 mag, with hollow points, good for anything from feral cats to and including bobcats and coyotes. Less recoil then the shotgun too, but after you fire a few boxes of shells through the shotgun it wont bother you at all. The .22 mag is just a hotter .22, sharp crack but no recoil to speak of. But it will drop a coyote or stray dog.

Kathy.....it's a little bigger than a large cat, so I think it's a young one. I think mama is teaching it to hunt because what I saw through the brush 3 weeks ago was a lot larger. (and it was farther away too)

Jake....The 30-06 only gives me welts because it's a bolt action, so a lot more kick. I've shot many rifles, but the bolt action just beats me up. DH also told me to hold it tight with the shotgun or I'm gonna be sorry.

Yup, make sure to hold on tight. And like Jake said, make sure it is well on your shoulder, otherwise...slip...bang! and the gun is laying several feet behind you

or it will really be painful on your collerbone. And dont forget to make some tasty stew

I can't wait... My mom and sisters came up yesterday for a baby shower and brought me some pheasant eggs.. They were asking me about the chicks in the brooder, the eggs in the bator and apparently I became rather excited as I told them about the Icelandics and JGs I have coming to set on the 30th... Everyone was laughing at me.. My poor wife was trying so hard not to laugh she was crying... I really don't mind because I have all of you that understand where I'm coming from..
