Thanks Mary! Have you signed up yet for her Sisterhood of the Traveling Chicken tour? Openings are still available. High fences recommended but not required. She'll still find a way out.
Oh I totally forgot to report this. Stella hopped over the fence into the goat / emu yard yesterday and was immediately chased right back up and over by emus running fill tilt at her! It was hilarious. Michael thought the emus just saw her as a new friend but she panicked. I'll bet she stays out of that yard for awhile!
She's got some gypsy blood in her, that's for sure. I bet she'll be fast friends with the emus before you know it!!
Mary, thanks for sharing video's you do a great job
Andy, you look good with and without your beard
Dari, What a beautiful chicken house
Kathyinmo, you have got to have some of the prettiest chickens I have ever viewed
Thanks to all of you for sharing your stories, pictures of your life with the icelandic chickens and your place.I so enjoy read this thread it is like reading a favorite novel
I have been slowly surfing looking for info on the history of agriculture in Iceland, I found some references in Egils Saga, available through Amazon, Egil was one of the early chieftains and his Saga is a National Literature Treasure. Its also very interesting.
I found this as a link on another site on Iceland, there is only a single paragraph on the Icelandic chicken, I have found that the only grains raised in Iceland historically were barley and rye, and in the past century some oats. So I dont believe the chickens got a whole lot of grain, but I am still looking,
This link is interesting reading for an overal picture of farm life since the 8th Century.

She'll probably be hitching rides on their backs around the yard when they're big enough!
Must be what happened to my eggs, thought the box corners looked a little beat up, I'm really down right now, I just candled the eggs in the bator and had 14 scrambled, yes scrambled, I turned the egg and the whole mass of clear scramble rolls around inside the egg, first time I have seen anything like this!! I have two in the incubator still seem to be developing, don't dare go check under the broodies, but they seem to be setting pretty tight, I suppose we'll find out if they hatch next week!!! Is there anybody out there a little closer to me that might have some Icelandic eggs that might beable to part with?????
Oldiabird, I am sorry about your scrambled eggs. Were they all the ones from me? I will really have to start double boxing but I pack those eggs well! Maybe if there isn't as much packaging material between the inner and outer boxes the inner box won't take the impact as bad. I can send you more eggs around the first of May after I ship Shawn's eggs.
Darn postal service. I try to pack well and still keep the shipping costs low but they are working against me!

It's not your fault, I just got a new candler today and wanted to try it out, still not as good as I would like, can't really see much in the other two except at least the air cell is still intact in those two and the rest of the egg is dark so at least it has developed , seems to be proportional to its' age. These were all from you, I have 8 of yours under a porcelain d'uccle banty and she is really setting tight, I saw her off the nest once , but as soon as I got in the building she hiked right back onto the eggs. I have another 8 eggs from Camelot under a buff cochin banty, and there was two eggs out from under her once and I put them back under her and I have not ever seen her off the nest, though she has left me the signs that she has been off. I read something on one of the other threads saying that they thought there should be more cushion?????? rather than being packed so that the eggs couldn't move because all of the shock is then taken by the embryo inside the egg, because it can't go any where else, I don't know what it takes, maybe bigger pillow type cushions ,or the bigger bubblewrap, got some eggs with styrofoam on the inside of the box than paper, than bubblewrap around the cartons and each egg wrapped in napkin and bubblewrap, but I didn't hatch anything from that shipment, 3/4 clears at 10 days nobody hatched!!!! I guess this is the first I've saw the scrambled, so maybe it was an isolated incident, sorry for rambling, I would be willing to give it another try, just send me an e-mail when you are ready to send and I will reimburse you for shipping at least, Please let me know , THANKS Mary !!!
