Icelandic Chickens

Shannon,

I checked about three hours ago and no pips yet! I think we are on day 17 so maybe a little bit early. Ironically my two black hens that are from my first hatch from Mary are laying as well as my Lyle Behl hen and I have a lady coming in to pick up 9 babies,.... whew just in the nick of time! We are getting them out there!

Daria,

Are you comfortable with your new setup? If it doesn't work out its ok, I'll be putting in LB eggs in another 3-4 days when I have 15 or so. And I'll give you chicks out of those!

For us, finding all the darned entry points has been a challenge--it's amazing what they'll climb! But your setup is a lot more practical, being on a slab, and I'd bet you'll be able to block the rodents out. I don't think I'll ever use a dirt-floor barn again.

Okay, I have to ask: fishbowl?

I have visions of Icelandics wearing flippers and dive masks!

Rodents are a continual problem for everyone, first guard is good pens, for me I think a 2nd one is a couple of great cats that have been trained by a tough roo to leave chicks alone, cats learned fast, the next line of defense is the Havahart, rats and coons get a swimming lesson in the trap at the barrel, possums and skunks get a five mile ride to the national forest. I do sprinkle dcon down holes when I find them.

I moved the chicks from the totes to a big wire dog crate, with some smaller wire up the sides to keep the littleist guys in,

they like it a lot better, come up to the side of the cage to see what I am doing, a couple come up and explore my hand, soon should be eating from my hand, hoping for some more chicks tomorrow. We'll see.

I am thinking that the PO system scrambles half or more of shipped eggs. I received PMs from others who read this thread that most of their mailed eggs they received were scrambled. I know that some folks have decent results so I am thinking its a crap shoot.

Jake
