Icelandic Chickens

Kathy I just covet your new hampshires. I really would love a few for my laying flock-they are simply gorgeous! Maybe we can trade for the silver laced or gold laced brahma chicks I just hatched

Good morning, everyone!

Mahonri keeps warning me what great flyers the Icelandic chicks are. My batch certainly is active...they seem to be out-freaksowing the freakshow turkeys in the brooder.

Hey all, long time no chat... My Icelandics are doing absolutely wonderful. I will try and get some good photos this weekend. We got the temporary run around the coop so they are out and about, chasing bugs and investigating EVERYTHING, which is making them happy. Even in a crowd of 40 misc. birds, my Icelandics are the ones who come running, at least long enough to see if I have treats, before they zip off to another distraction.

So far, they are happy enough to stay in their run with the other birds. It's a 5 foot fence with no cover, there are a few places they could go under to, but they haven't .... yet

My Icelandics can fly they just don't seem to do it. They do sometimes fly a long distance barely off the ground to come up to the house if they think I have treats. The fence surrounding our free range acreage is only 4 feet high. The only one who flies over is Stella and she gets a good scolding by Isi everytime she comes back in. My fear is the monkey see-monkey do phenomenon but so far they have stayed put for the nearly six months they have been free ranging.

MARY- Two of your grandbabies are black with black skin and beaks. Are these babies Stellites?

No way! I have never, will never hatch Stella eggs because my efforts are in breed preservation. From the first egg she laid, it was apparent she was not pure Icelandic. She was just my inspiration for seeking out Icelandics. Here are pictures of her eggs. I think you can see that it is not even questionable whether or not an egg came from Stella. You can see the one Stella egg in the carton is obvious. I'm old but I can still see!

By the way, I have a hen with an uncanny resemblance to Stella but it is pure Icelandic and lays white eggs. That coloring is just one of the possibilities with these birds.

I need some Icelandic girls for these 2 crazy hormonal boys I kept out of the last big batch I sent to Arkansas. They are driving us all nuts. Really, they need some female companions!

Whatcha selling Kathy?

I've got a broody momma that I'm sure would love some babies.
