Icelandic Chickens

OK, Cyn, after you read the whole thread and pass the quiz I'll send you some eggs!

The good news is there will not be any questions concerning donkeys, emus, goats, or Stella so you can skim over those posts.

Mine have always come back to the coop to lay with the exception of Stella. That being said, the hop-up boards have come loose from the nest boxes so they are starting to lay in the hay in the floor. A trip to the Home Depot for nuts and bolts will hopefully fix this.

My two girls have always laid their eggs in the coop in a nest box. They now have a favorite and both use it......when they aren't "with chicks"!!

Thanks for the pictures!

I have 28 or 29 Icelandic chicks still inside with me. Tomorrow they are definitely moving outside!

I like this chick from the last hatch....

Sorry to be hijacking this thread-

There are no good or bad quality Icelandics- They don't have an SOP and never will since they come in so many patterns and such. The point is that breeders are trying to keep these bred true and not cross with anything for preservation efforts.

Sorry, I'll go now. That's what I think.

Nick

Oh, ok! Now that makes more sense, thank you.

Another question. I had sent a link to this thread to a person interested in Icelandics. He commented back that Mary had written in an early post on this thread that Icelandics weren't particularly good layers, is that still the case? You all seem to be getting plenty of eggs. I think I remember reading that reference in some of the published material that you copied and referenced not something you had actually found to be true.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Here are updated pics of the leftovers from Jake's hatch.

Don't despair if you get an inordinate number of blonde chicks. They can end up any color. Look at the wing feathers coming in on this pure blondie.

Here's the pair of them. The little brown guy has really rallied around.
