Icelandic Chickens

If I said that it might have been based on something I read or was told. In my experience, I have found them to be good layers! I have 26 girls and I am getting 12 to 18 eggs a day and many of my young pullets aren't laying yet. So I stand corrected!

Michelle, with the age of the blondie, I'm going to say male. I'm sure you'll let me know if I'm wrong!

Excellent I will share that info with the perspective addict. I'm sure we'll have him hooked in no time

Tempting Jake! You could have this circus in your yard too! I know you have asked about temperament and I have no idea how they will be when they grow up but right now they are the sweetest babies in earth. They run to us every time they see us and like to be petted and played with. They get so excited when they see us that they fall and roll around on the ground. I hope they never change

Shawn's hatch is on lockdown!

The eggs are divided between the two Brinseas on my bookshelf and Kelly's Hovabator is waiting for the hatchlings to arrive. They will stay in there until they ship. One egg got a slight crack when I removed the rails but I put wax on it and hope for the best.

Mary there is an incredible amount of variety in the little guys, the wings are every color you can think of. Every time that I look at them there is a new 'look' to some, I can hardly wait to get them out to the chicken house and in the run, but they got a good four weeks to go for that. If that soon.

The emus are a riot, the make or break for me will be the mature temperaments, like, what do you do with a tough mature emu??? That said I like them, vicariously, so far. Are they pretty let live with your goats? They are something else I would like to add, I love Goats milk Feta. And the wethers would make good packers for all of our forest trails here. So they are on a back burner, maybe by fall.

My first chipmunks are quite gentle, I pick them all up daily, Issison has come close but still a bit standoffish.

BTW, I was going to mention earlier, I have been using Turkey Starter to get them all growing and it is worth the extra, I am keeping them all on it until this new group is off to a good start, fwiw.

Jake, I use Purina Gamebird Startena, 30% protein, for my chicks. I feel they are more like gamebirds than domesticated chickens in many aspects. Most commerical chicken starters were formulated using broiler or layer industry models......not what we got going on!

Michelle, My two girls started laying at 6 months (hatched first week of May '10, first eggs Nov 11-14). I didn't keep a count of how many but they layed regularly throughout the winter and spring until each went broody. Perhaps the broodiness would put them into a "not a layer" catagory according to some because total egg count would go down, but it's a trait many of us want.

Mary,

for all (even though that would mean I wouldn't be able to win the cool sign

) of Shawn's eggs to hatch!!

The emus are very cute but no temptation for me.........now Diana...... maybe!!

Cute chicks everyone!!

Anna was hanging around Audun and the hens yesterday and spending less time with her chicks (now five weeks old)....she didn't go into the Ice House to sleep with them though. She was with her five in their little coop at sundown........but, I don't think it will be long before she's back with the main flock.........she was squatting for Audun instead of puffing out and pecking at him. Maybe another hatch for her this summer!!

Asta's single chick is doing great. If the weather cooperates, I'll let them outside today.
One of the three chicks at my friend's house was limping yesterday. I went over and helped her move the hen and chicks out of the main coop into a separate one. She thinks it may have gotten stepped on by mom when defending them from the rest of the flock. They now have their own private place!
The teens, week befores and Easter Hatchalongs are all growing and getting big. I'll try and get some pics this week.

Off to get chores done.....then off to church...didn't realize how late it getting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
